Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Emson Bacon Wave, Microwave Bacon CookerCustomer Review: Works well but you must be careful. Summary: 4 Stars
This is a very good way to cook bacon in your microwave, but just as all things cooked in a microwave, you must be careful about over cooking. The issue that many people have had with this device is that the microwave was left on too long and the bacon heated up so much that its high temperature actually caused the plastic supports in the mocrowave to soften, and at worst case, to begin to melt. We used this device for over a year cooking bacon in a high power microwave about 1 time per week and had no problem until my wife (not me of course) accidently set the microwave for a much longer time than was necessary. In this instance, the plastic skewers that hold the bacon began to soften, and the bacon was almost burnt. So I do recommend this product if you are careful not to let the bacon overheat. It is much better to reduce the initial cooking time by 15-20% or reduce the cooking power proportinately and cook the bacon after it is almost done in short time increments after that until it reaches your final desired level of doneness. Obviously this is not as trouble free as some would like, but is still is much easier than cooking bacon in a frying pan or roaster. From our experience, one must continuously overcook the bacon a tremendous amount to actually melt the plastic because the plastic is not melted by the microwaves, it is melted by the high temperature the bacon reaches when cooked for too long a time without checking it for doneness or allowing it to cool a little before cooking it to its final stage of doneness. Of course, I can only speak in reference to the cooker we have. I suppose there is some way that the plastic material in some cookers was below specification and accordingly did not withstand the normal amount of heat generated. I can imagine no other explanation given the experience we have had. For us, this microwave bacon cooker still remains the easiest way to cook a quantity of bacon without a messy pan and a grease splattered stove top. But, it still does required attention as do most foods worthy of your taking time to cook and eat. Our cooker, by the way, is cleaned very well in the dishwasher. Because of the accidental overheating of the skewers that came with our bacon cooker, I am going to order another one and we will be a little more careful in the future. Since these bacon cookers are relatively inexpensive, the convenience and results are worth the price in our opinion.
