Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EdgeCraft 610 Chef's Choice Premium Electric Food SlicerCustomer Review: Chefs choice 610 slicer Summary: 5 Stars
Bought this on sale and got an extra 10% off on special. Total of $89... I had been watching this and also the varitilt 632. Planned uses are for homemade bacon, Canadian bacon and pastrami. After reading many reviews I was a little cautious, but I am glad I went for the 610. Cut a tip roast tonight for sandwich meat and it was awesome. The slicer went through slightly warm meat with very thin slices. If I had wanted thinner I would have had to freeze the meat slightly. Overall very satisfied. Clean up is very easy, after removing the food slider, the thickness plate and the blade, I used a dry paper towel to get the initial mess, then went back with soapy water and bleach for the disinfecting. The blade is extremely sharp, so be careful when handling. The little black plastic piece that is used to "steer" the cut slice away comes off, and simply snaps back in. I would totally recommend this slicer for the random user like myself, it's not a commercial deli slicer, but it's not a $2500 piece of equipment either.
Customer Review: Making pleasant looking food was never easier. Summary: 5 Stars
I have only used my slicer twice since I received it. First, I would like to remind purchasers that the blades (I bought the ham slicer blade) are very sharp. However, used according to instructions keeps fingers on your hand and a smile on your face. I had great success by allowing the meat to sit in the refrigerator long enough to become more solid. After slicing I applied a glaze then baked an additional time. I again used the ham slicer blade for a beef brisket following the same procedure. It provided perfect presentable slices which were placed in sealed bags and frozen. The meat was used later for curry, Stroganoff, and sandwiches. Slicing the meat extended the meat over more servings. I highly recommend this slicer.
It does take a while to clean up but if done immediately after use it is quite a snap. All the parts necessary for cleaning are exposed for a cloth to reach.
Remember: Be careful around the blades they are sharp. After all that's why they work so well.
Customer Review: Good choice in a food slicer Summary: 4 Stars
I agonized for days over which brand of food slicer I should buy to get the best value for my money. I chose the EdgeCraft 610, the lower end of the manufacturer's line, and I am sooo happy I did. Recently, I've been getting into making beef jerky for my family, friends and me (especially). I decided to get an electric slicer after a painful bout of tendonitis I got from slicing just 10 pounds of beef with a chef's knife. It has certainly taken the pain out of slicing meat to jerky thinkness. I haven't tried it on anything else except stick summer sausage, salami and the like but I know it can be used for a bunch of slicing needs. I didn't give it 5 stars because its rubber feet are too small and don't provide a very good grip. A minor issue is that it comes with a serated blade and I think a smooth blade would be even better, one of each would be ideal. So far at least I have no regrets and would recommend this slicer for occassional kitchen use (it's not a butcher counter slicer after all).
Customer Review: Great product for the money Summary: 4 Stars
For $100 you really can't go wrong with this machine. When I got mine a few weeks ago, there was an insert alerting me that the plastic screw so many other users have negatively commented on has been modified to a better design. Although it is still breakable (if you twist it in way too tight, duh) it is much more sturdy than the previous reviewers must have experienced with their original equipment.
Cleanup is fairly easy, except you will need to invest in some food grade machine lubricant for after you clean it. The blade is sharp and can cut razor thin slices of hame and cheese (all Ive tried so far).
The amount of money you save by buying large hams and turkey breasts will pay for this machine easily.
I learned a lesson about buying cheese in bulk though - use it up, give it to friends, but don't freeze it.
Overall this is a great product and is great around the house - I just wish I had a food saver to go along with it.
Customer Review: Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
While I may not be a professional cook (far from it, actually) this item has been a wonderful addition to my array of cooking devices. This electric food slicer is able to slice just about anything into just about any size. Also, if one ever needs to, say, slice a zucchini extremely thin, on a relatively frequent basis, then this is the way to go.
Using the 610 Premium Electric Food Slicer is a snap. All you do is assemble, place the food on the tray, and slide it over the spinning blade. Also, clean-up is just as easy. You disassemble, wash lightly but thoroughly, dry, then reassemble. Also, unless you do something stupid, it is near impossible to cut yourself using this device.
If you aren't going to use it often, then I would recommend not buying an electric slicer, but just cutting the food with a knife instead. However, if you are going to use it on a regular basis, then there is no slicer I would recommend more from a financial and quality standpoint.
