Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EdgeCraft 610 Chef's Choice Premium Electric Food SlicerCustomer Review: Great slicer Summary: 4 Stars
When researching my slicer purchase, it became apparent that many of the less expensive products were not worth the money. The Chef's Choice item had primarily favorable reviews, althhough there were some negatives. I risked it and was glad I did.
It works as advertised and turned 10 pounds of beef into candidate jerky quickly. It also made slicing the Thanksgiving turkey breast a breeze. Some had complained that it (and other slicers) didn't make consistently thick slices, but I discovered that was more a function of operator error than the sliceer (if you push it too fast, it will thin the slice as it passes through). Also, some complained about the device "walking" across the counter and I too had that experience but think it is more a matter of being overly aggressive with the slicing. Clean-up is quick and easy although handling the blade can be intimidating.
The ONLY (minor) negative I have about the Chef's Choice is the output. There is not enough room between the blade and the catch tray so it rapidly fills up and progress must be suspended while slices are retrieved. Minor annoyance.
All in all - WELL worth the price. BTW: as a special nod to Amazon, I went with standard shipping and actually received the product the next day. Great.
Customer Review: A very good value Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the EdgeCraft 610 based in large part on the many positive reviews posted on Amazon. Although I can foresee using it for other purposes, the primary intended use is slicing paper-thin ribeye for the Japanese hotpot dish known as "shabu-shabu."
A few days ago I cut two 4-pound portions of partially frozen ribeye, and the EdgeCraft 610 performed perfectly. I realize that some reviewers have commented that this unit isn't capable of producing paper-thin slices, but that certainly wasn't my experience at all. When I held a slice up to eye level, I was able to see light right through the slice. I used the unit for at least 20 minutes straight, and there were no issues with overheating. I was also impressed with the stability of the unit. The base didn't move at all when the slicer was in operation.
As for cleanup, the components detached easily, and the blade is also easy to remove. I wiped down the base with a wet dish rag, and it came clean without any hassle. It does take a little time to push some meat scraps from a couple of nooks and crannies, but such is the case with ANY slicer, including expensive commercial ones.
For a slicer that costs roughly $100, the EdgeCraft 610 represents a fine value. This is a well-made product.
Customer Review: Super great satisfaction, best slicer I ever bought! Summary: 5 Stars
This slicer is great. The thickness dial is accurate, and the food tray slides smoothly, and even locks when not in use to keep little fingers from getting cut. Slicing with this slicer can be easily done by one person (the one I had before, I needed my wife to hold the on switch and the slicer, while I sliced, and the unit kept pushing away) This slicer cuts accurately, and smoothly. For the price, you get professional quality. I once had a small Mom & Pop grocery in Opal (Mena, Polk County) Arkansas with a commercial slicer that never worked as good as this one. The only thing that I want to mention, that wasn't a product problem, was that the blade it comes with is listed as being an all purpose blade, and on the same page is shown a serrated blade for it, which I purchased and when I received it, it was the exact same blade that came with the slicer. Also, there is a smooth blade available, but not on Amazon.com. It's worth getting and the supplier for it has no tax and free shipping and it's reasonably priced (google, Chefs Choice Model 610 Slicer Smooth Blade to find it.)
Personally I feel that if someone finds fault with this slicer, it may not be the slicers fault but the users perception, or they are slicing while not watching what they're doing. See I Peter 2:21-24
Customer Review: Excellent slicer for the money Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this slicer based on the 230+ positive reviews (4 or above). I also read some of the negative reviews and wanted to see if they were valid.
Well, the good news is that this slicer performs as well as all of the positive reviewers said it would. I can set the dial on 1 and it cuts meat (turkey, chicken, beef, ham, etc.) into paper-thin slices. My previous slicer (which quit after 6 years of daily use) could not slice meat thin without tearing it and causing it to crumble.
I was also able to cut cheddar cheese into paper thin slices without any problem. My preteen children love to eat the extra thin slices and now prefer them as snacks instead of junk food.
One of the best features of this slicer is the rocker switch that allows you to turn the motor on and keep it running. Or, by pressing it in the opposite direction, it allows you to "pulse" the blade as long as you hold the switch down. My previous slicer had an interlock system that required me to hold down two switches to start the motor.
The negative reviews insinuated that it was impossible to get thin slices from this machine and I found that these complaints were not valid. I agree with 91% of the reviewers who rated this product 4 or 5 and deem it to be a BEST BUY.
Customer Review: Better than expected Summary: 5 Stars
I am very pleased with this product for the following reasons:
1. Sturdy construction: when slicing, none of the frame bends or deflects so I get a uniform thickness on all of the cuts, from thick to very thin.
2. Although there is an optional meat slicing blade, I have had no problems slicing ham on the #3 setting - very thin, but not paper thin.
3. Easy clean-up: It is easy to take apart for cleaning and easy to put back together. It is almost fool proof. The blade retaining device appears flimsy, but so far it has not been a problem.
4. The cord storage is really nice since you only need to retract the amount you need to reach the outlet. This keeps a long cord from being in the way. Also, the cord comes out of the back of the unit - completely out of the way.
5. It is fairly quite and the power switch is easy to reach and operate.
6. The slices fall onto an open area that is large enough for you to use a dinner plate and not the tray that comes with the unit.
7. I have only used one food slicer which was many years ago, so it is difficult to compare this unit to that unit, but I do consider the Chef's Choice 610 to be an excellent value for the price.
