Customer Review: Awesome and Surprising Slicer - Get Non-Serrated Blade Too
Summary: 5 Stars

First, you're definitely going to want the non-serrated blade for this slicer. It comes with the serrated blade, and you can easily find the non-serrated for under $30. I got this one, and it's great: Chef'sChoice Non-Serrated Blade for Model 610 Food Slicer Serrated is great for breads and vegetables, and the non-serrated is perfect for ultra-thin sliced meats and cheese.

I used it today on some cheddar, mozzarella, corned beef, and turkey breast, and when you get the feeling for how the particular food "responds" to the machine and when you get the technique down just right and keep your material just above frozen - you can make the slices fine-linen thin, like transparent parchment. As my grandmother would say of ideal deli-work, "It floats", a slice just sways in the breeze. It's amazing how much fuller the flavor of certain foods can be expressed on your tongue when you go from merely thin to extra-thin.

Now, I give this product 5-stars, but I'll note that it's not a replacement for the professional multi-horsepower models that cost at least 10 times more. The blade does not spin very fast (though, it doesn't need to) and it can take a little extra effort to hold the food in place. Cleaning up is a bit awkward, but not too problematic. But for the price and for ordinary home slicing - the quality-to-cost ratio, that is, the *value* is simply astonishing. You're going to conclude it's worth more than every penny. Bottom Line - I'm extremely pleased, and it will change your food purchasing decisions forever in favor of things you can slice fresh and super-thin on your own. There's no going back.

Customer Review: Our New Food Slicer!
Summary: 5 Stars

My sister got my mom a huge 10 pound mortadella for Christmas. Oh, my gosh. A really BIG MORTA (my nickname for it). My mom looked at the mortadella and made a breathless sigh... There was a lot of cheering, whooping and laughter from the rest of the family. It really was a beautiful moment.

But, after the cheering stopped, I realized that it would be my job to get the beast of meat sliced up properly! I didn't want my mom to go at it and just start hacking it up.

So, I started looking into meat slicers. One of the reasons I shop on Amazon so much is the ability to read the reviews on products. This slicer had great reviews and the price was good. I bought it! Wow, we were going to be a family that owned a food slicer now.

It arrived and I read the instructions. I read the instructions, where I often do not, because I have a lot of respect for sharp blades. I didn't want to mess something up and have something other than the Big Morta sliced up (like me). But, the slicer has all sorts of safety features and guards and it was very easy to use and I didn't have any problems.

AND it was super easy to clean. The whole thing comes apart and it washes very fast. The instructions said to use vaseline as a lubricant when putting the blade back on, so I did that. I don't know if that's the best lube, but since the instructions stated to use it, I thought it would be ok.

Oh, we are having the whole family over tonight and we are going to have a Morta Fest. Lots of thinly sliced mortadella, cheese, crusty bread, olives... Can't wait!

Customer Review: Pretty good for a home slicer
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this for the sole reason of slicing venison for jerkey. I was tired of all the fine slicing I had to do with the meat to get it thin enough for jerkey. I received the slicer and realized I could do so much more with it.

Pros:
1. Light weight and stores easily.
2. Nice range of slice thickness.
3. Easy to disassemble for cleaning.

Cons:
1. Doesn't cut through meat all of the way at the bottom. I am constantly left with the bottom of the meat hanging and can only slice one at a time. I have to turn the unit off and pull the slice out before I can do another. This is somewhat fixable by making sure your meat is either firm or partially frozen. Also, be sure to either trim the fat off or have it at the top. The firmer part of the meat definitely needs to go at the bottom to reduce the problem I mention here.

2. Doesn't have a lot of power to slice through certain foods. While I haven't experienced it smoking like others have, you do have to push pretty hard on firm or partially frozen meats.

3. Food gets caught up in the food deflector (I am wondering if this isn't part of problem #1).

I've made some good jerkey and pork chops out of a roast (saves $$). Can't wait to use this more now that I know some of the tricks to keep it working better. I think the blade may also need to be sharpened from what the factory sends it like to keep the hanging problem from happening.

Customer Review: Model 610 Food Slicer Is a Real Winner
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used the Chef's Choice Model 610 Food Slicer almost daily since I received it.
I am amazed at the quality of this unit and it's very low price of $99.00.
I was a little apprehensive about some of the reviews concerning the blade's screw tab breaking, the poor slicing ability and the trouble some reviewers had cleaning it.
However, there were also many good reviews, which is why I purchased it.
I am not the least bit sorry for that decision.
The manufacturer apparently read some of those reviews about the blade screw because the unit I received came with a slotted screw which requires a coin to be used to turn the screw...not a big deal, I use a quarter and keep it in the box when I store it away so it's always handy.
As far as the slicing ability reviews that claimed thin slices were impossible I tried cutting very cold meat, as suggested by Stargazer in his review, I have shaved ham, sliced wafer thin ham, summer sausage and thinly sliced roast beef for great Italian Beef sandwiches, (I cut the roast down a little to match the blade's ability)and have sliced homemade bread with ease, all with the serrated blade.
As far as the cleaning is concerned, it's not something everyone loves to do but all the parts remove and reassemble easily and can be done in less than ten minutes.
To me this Food Slicer deserves a ten star rating, couldn't be happier.

Customer Review: Does What I Wanted
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this based on the reviews and I'm very happy with the results. I don't have any other food slicers to compare it to however.

Pro's: I mainly got it to slice meat and except for a small learning curve, it has done a very good job of that.

Cons: Nothing big, mainly nit picky.
1. It would be more convenient if the control knob for the depth of cut was marked in inches instead of being numbered from 0 to 20, requiring me to use a ruler to measure it.
2. It isn't difficult to clean, but it takes enough time that it isn't worth using it just to slice a few pieces of meat for dinner, so I still use a knife for that. Best use is for slicing large amounts of meat at once.
3. The hardest things about it to clean is the blade because of the large amount of grease on the side of the blade with the gear. Most of the other parts I just wipe down with a disinfectant wipe.
4. For slicing meat, I've found that freezing the meat slightly doesn't help that much and I need to freeze it nearly solid, or cook it first to get really even slices.
5. Not a problem, but I still haven't figured out when I'd use the pulse feature on the on/off switch, but it may be more useful when slicing something other than meat.

None of the things listed above are a big problem, mainly just things I had to get use to and I would definitely buy this slicer again. It does a great job for the price.
