Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale - Professional Food and Nutrient CalculatorCustomer Review: Makes watching calories and food groups easier Summary: 4 Stars
We've had the EatSmart scale for a short while, so I can't comment on durability. However, it is now much easier to watch food intake. The scale zeros out the weight of the plate and anything you've added before, so that you can gradually build up your meal on the plate to stay within limits you or your doctor set. Then you just take the plate to the table.
I would give this a "5" rating if it had a little reader to take food codes from prepared items like cereals. It has data for common unprepared foods, fruits, vegetables and the like built in. At present, for foods with the Food Facts label on them, you must manually enter the serving amount and food category of interest (say, carbohydrates) for the scale to calculate total carbs for your particular portion. To provide the increased capability it lacks, however, would probably significantly increase the cost, as it would really be a small, probably internet capable, computer at that point.
As it is, EatSmart helps keep you honest about food intake (unfortunately).

I was so very excited about this scale, but ended up very disappointed with the item. I was just recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and when I found this scale I thought that this could really be a great tool to help me manage my diabetes. I found this scale hard to get it to work. You are supposed to be able to add whatever food items you are eating one at a time and the scale is supposed to be able to give you a running total of your total calories, carbs, sodium, fat, etc. As I added food items, I would constantly find that the scale was not adding the previous item or was not clearing the previous total from the meal before and then I'd end up with a total of some ungodly number of calories. When I would use the "tare" button to zero out previous entries, it would not work until I pressed it several times. Sometimes my husband would be half way through with his meal and I'd still be messing around trying to figure out my numbers. Too much trouble and not worth the effort. I guess I'll just have to do it the old fashioned way.
Customer Review: EatSmart Works Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using my new EatSmart Nutrition Scale EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale - Professional Food and Nutrient Calculator for several weeks now and have found it is the key to losing weight. The scale makes it very easy to keep track of what I eat...even when I prepare an entertainment meal for guest. Using the numerous built-in food choices and the "Tare" feature, I can capture the calorie value of the various foods AS I PUT THEM ON MY PLATE. That assures strict compliance to portion control, which is my number one challenge. Everyone underestimates the food they eat by simply looking at it and guessing the amount. But now, no matter what I cook, I can be reasonable in what I eat. I have lost 16 pounds in 4 1/2 weeks by simply watching what I eat and keeping under 2000 calories a day. No special exercise/plan/food...just better knowledge of what I consume.
I not only would recommend this product to friends...I HAVE.

EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale - Professional Food and Nutrient Calculator
The scale met every expectation and promise listed on the Amazon site.
My favorite feature of the scale is it's able to zero out any container before weighing the content placed in the container. This feature keeps the scale clean and free of food residue. All data features are easy to use and there is more information than I will ever use in each food analysis. The only feature I have had problems with is the brightness of the digital readout. I have a very bright (windows on 3 sides)kitchen and I find it hard to read the small data readouts. I also have a hard time reading my laptop in this room so I did not downgrade. One feature I would like to add to this scale would be a printer connection so I didn't have to write down everything. Even if this required an AC connection it would be desirable. Overall the scale does everything it promised to do.
Customer Review: Disappointed.... Summary: 2 Stars
The scale looks really good, and seems very accurate. However, I'm disappointed in it for the following reasons:
1. The LCD display is very difficult to read. It's hard to tell if a number is a zero, an eight, a four, or a blank (at the front end), which makes it very challenging to read the value. I've looked at it with and without the built-in light, and it's always difficult. It's also difficult to read which of the scales you are on for the multi-function button.
2. The three-digit codes are meaningless - you have to look them up every time you use it. I was expecting a word or a way to search for the food I'm weighing. I was hoping with the memory, that I would be able to store things with a meaningful name, but no such luck.
3. Similar to other reviews, I haven't figured out how to add ingredients without just logging them on a separate paper.
If all you want to do is weigh something, that works fine, but what I thought would be some really helpful features are not helping me.
