Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale - Professional Food and Nutrient Calculator

Customer Review: Good tool for those working on their weight..
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall this is a great product. It is stable and accurate and for the most part easy to use. I do get impatient looking things up on a list, though - I am so used to doing everything electronically where you can just search. Its like I want to just tell it what the food is rather than entering a code. I get REALLY frustrated when it times out on me when I am looking for the ingredient, so I have learned not to put it on the scale until I have looked up the code, cause if it times out, then you have to transfer the ingredient into another freshly- tared container, which is a pain.

I used their customer support (sent them an e-mail), and I have to tell you that they were super responsive. They got back to me within a matter of hours. Their response told me that the scale will not do what I wanted to do, but I forgave them because they responded quickly, and totally explained the rationale as to why they designed it how they did, so I really appreciated that.

I guess for me, it's just a little below perfect, because I wanted it to perform the nutritional analysis on a number of recipes that I routinely make. I wanted to be able to add each of the ingredients and get an accurate total, but for most of my recipes, there are one or more ingredients that they don't have. Mostly, these are ingredients that come with nutritional information already on them, so I can add them back at the end (for example, olives), but I don't want to have to do that - it's a pain.

Having said that, I use it all the time - even weighed a letter with it this morning, and gradually all of my recipes have nutritional analysis attached now - which has helped me to the 14lb weight loss that I have achieved over the last 8 weeks! Very good scale, but not EXACTLY all that I would like it to be!!

Customer Review: So close but yet so far...

I was very excited to get this scale. As a diabetic it is important to monitor my carb and calorie intake, etc. The first mission I gave my scale was to calculate the nutritional value of my pizza crust recipe. I put my mixing bowl on the scale a reset it to zero. I begin to add ingredients, whole wheat flour, sugar... Wait. I can't find sugar on the "food code list". Really? I read it again. Nope, it's not there. I have to calculate the sugar values manually. I move on. Baking powder. Nope, not there either. I end up having to do a ton of manual calculations to get it right in the end. Hey EatSmart, let's drop some of the things that few people eat like eel and octopus and add some real cooking ingredients to your food code list! Tracking things like sugar is of the highest importance to a diabetic.

Additionally, as has been mentioned, the readout is difficult to see. It might help if you used a surface that doesn't have such a high glare. It might also help if the display was backlit. Displays are cheap these days. Bigger, brighter and easier.

Finally, the scale wobbles on a flat surface. A manufacturing defect I'm sure. You would expect better build quality from an item that costs so much.

While I will still find the scale useful, I can't begin to give this item a good review considering it was so poorly thought out and constructed.

One last comment to EatSmart if you are listening... Build a scale that connects to a computer via USB cable (say 6 or 8 foot) that allows software control and an infinite number of food ingredients. It could allow you to create and save custom ingredients and recipes. Nice try but, it just doesn't cut the mustard, (also not on the food code list).

Customer Review: The New and Improved Eatsmart Scale
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been eying this item for about a year, but couldn't bring myself to spend the money for it. I recently received an Amazon gift card and decided to go for it. So far, I am really happy with this purchase. I'm actually kind of glad I ended up waiting to get it. The reviews that complain about the readability - no longer an issue! The scale takes up very little room on my counter, yet the platform is large enough to put a full size dinner plate on it. With the backlighting, I can still read it with a plate on it, although a hold feature would be useful (maybe it even has it, so sorry if it does - I'm still learning about as I begin to use it). It seems to be extremely sensitive. You can drop individual mushroom slices and it will continue to add them, unlike some scales. This scale definitely seems to have the most bang-for-your-buck and has high reviews just about everywhere on the web. If you're debating whether this scale is worth it, go for it; I really don't think you'll be disappointed. I'm following a low carb way of eating, and normally track my food with an online program. While that works great at home, I don't have Internet at our cabin in the boonies, so this will keep me on track when I can't look up food values on the Internet. We also have a variety of other special dietary needs in the family, so I have to cook to adapt for everyone's needs. This scale gives you all the information you need to make sure your meals are healthy and acceptable for everyone's needs (sodium, potassium, carbs, fiber, and more). Weighing is so much more accurate than saying a "medium whatever food," as shown in many food calculators.

Customer Review: Review by my wife Cheryl
Summary: 5 Stars

After a lifetime of eating anything I wanted but remaining a trim 110 pounds, middle-age spread found me. I joined a weight loss program, and the pounds are coming off. But while meticulously measuring my food and counting points, I kept wondering, "What's in here? Am I getting enough nutrients? Is this REALLY a half cup of grapes?" I needed education. I needed a food scale. I researched every scale I could find online and learned that the EatSmart nutrition scale was the best choice.

My order arrived quickly, and every day I confirm that I made the right choice. The EatSmart scale looks great on my counter, where it stands ready to use at all times. The things I rely on most are its ease of use, its accuracy, and the feedback of nutritional information for 12 nutrients. (Wow!) I am gaining a much deeper understanding of the food I eat. Red or yellow, tomatoes are just tomatoes, right? No! With the EatSmart scale, I immediately see the difference in the nutritional values of these two foods. Armed with knowledge, I can make better choices for my weight loss program and for my health. Now I don't have to guess which foods are high in sodium or calcium. I don't have to wonder why my weight loss was slower some weeks, even though I thought I was "being good." Too many calories! Now I know exactly how many calories I am eating. The EatSmart scale is educating me. While I use it for weight loss/health, my family uses the scale for general cooking and baking. The only improvements I would suggest would be to add a backlight and an AC adapter to support the backlight for us power users.

Customer Review: An Amazing Advance
Summary: 4 Stars

I've been quite pleased with the EatSmart scale. The level of preciseness it brings to the (literal) table is wonderful, and allows me to manage my Type II diabetes. And the additional calculations of carbs, calories, etc. are wonderful--I particularly like the ability to measure label quantities. Either my mental math was off or those pretzel manufacturers haven't done their work in a little while, because I discovered I was eating almost twice as much as I should have once I started to really measure.

As for the critical side, there are three things I wish the scale had:
1) Bigger Typeface--I know there's a lot of info, but I'm 40 and have to lean close to read. I'd love to recommend this to my 65+ uncle, but he would have a tough time reading some of the smaller pieces of data on the screen.
2) Storage of Regular Items--Because I'm trying to watch what I eat, I often eat the same things. I wish there were up to 25 storage elements for me to keep regularly tapped data, rather than having to go back to the back-of-the-box every time.
3) Backlight--The manual mentions an auto-on backlight, but mine doesn't appear to have one. I don't have the most light-filled kitchen, and I would love it if the screen were a little better.

I suspect many out there have the same questions I had: Does it really do what it says? Is it better than others out there? Is it easy to use? And is it worth all that extra money? The answers to each of those questions would be a yes (although this isn't one of those product you can simply use without first reading the manual). Highly recommended.
