Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale - Professional Food and Nutrient CalculatorCustomer Review: Excellent scale for most....however 1 major option overlooked! Summary: 4 Stars
This scale performs very well and is very accurate. I knew what I was getting when I ordered and I have enjoyed its uses so far. I will however have to keep looking for a scale that meets, MY needs. I am a bodybuilder and I have found a few items missing that are crucial to what I am looking for in a nutritional scale of this level and price point.
1. The ability to combine the totals from both modes of operation. This seems to be one glaring oversight in this product. You can tally up all of the foods from the foods with codes so that you can track all day long what you have eaten. However you can not add in the nutritional values of foods that are calculated from the Nutrition Labels that it will calculate for you. ( I realize that this would be very tedious to do as you would have to manually input all nutritional elements you would want to keep track of and ultimately you would have incorrect values for some nutrients and not others.) The option to choose what nutrient values you wanted to include, mainly calories, carbs, fats, sodium, and cholesterol might become too much for some, but the option would be valuable to some.
2. Some calculations were in conflict with packaged products for whole foods. Mainly meat and poultry. I eat a lot of chicken and I trim mine of fat. Even though I choose the closest option for skinless chicken breast, it kept calculating more fat than it should. I did however like the raw and cooked options for many foods. This helps in case you forget to measure beforehand. (This may not matter to most as it is still very close and may be marginally off for some, but I need precise calculations.)
This is still a great product for what it does as it is EXTREMELY accurate, albeit a little slow when adding or removing food. You have to wait for it to recalculate which may frustrate some.
For anyone wanting to keep a more accurate record of their daily dietary intake would benefit from this product if you prepare most of your meals from whole foods. If you eat alot of processed foods then you will need to grab a pen and paper and combine all of your totals from both modes.
Customer Review: Wonderful tool for eating healthy! Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased the EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale and am extremely happy with it. It is simple to use and doesn't take up too much space. I had been trying to lose a few pounds (about 7) for a couple of months now by counting calories, fat and carbs using a nutrition book and relying on food labels and was not having any success. This scale is way more accurate for measuring the nutritional value of foods. For instance my book would say 1 small banana was so and so many calories...well what exactly is considered a "small" banana? Another thing I noticed is my morning oatmeal says 1/3 cup dry equals 160 calories, but in actuality the true measurement in grams (40g) is actually less than 1/3 cup. This scale lets me know the true exact amount so I'm not over or under estimating. I buy individually flash frozen fish. On the bag it says one fillet is 90 calories....not so....when weighed according to the gram measurement on the bag my scale says the fillets range from 130 up to 150 calories! Now that is a significant difference! The more foods I weighed the more I found out to be inaccurate on the labels or according to my book. So all in all I am very excited to have this scale so that I will be eating exactly what I intend to eat and not some estimation based on general information. Perhaps that is why I didn't drop any weight...I was actually eating more calories than I thought (oh, and I had and still am working out 5 days a week vigorously - been doing that for many many years). I am anxious to see if now that I am using the EatSmart Scale if I will have more sucess with losing those stubborn pounds. As well as it being beneficial for calorie counting it is great for knowing other nutritional values like calcium which is very important for us women, as well as other valuable nutrients. I can see where it would be an invaluable tool for those who are diabetic and would highly recommend it for that purpose. So in closing, I would say it is well worth the price and I am very happy with my purchase!
Customer Review: A Wake up Call Summary: 5 Stars
After many years of trying all kinds of micronutrient-specific diets without too much success (read low-fat first, low-carb later), I decided to simplify and start controlling my overall food intake.I bought a food journal where I record my daily intake. It became obvious that I need a good food scale to measure my portions. It is human to underestimate the amounts of food you consume and I had an inkling I was subconsciously "cheating".
I did read the reviews here and they were extremely helpful. I ordered, and the scale arrived very quickly. It even had the 4 AAA batteries included, which is rare when you buy any kind of electronics. It is cute and stays out on my counter. The glass top is easy to wipe down. It has all the features I need, such as measure nutritional value, the tare feature, the serv feature for measuring the value of prepackaged foods, etc. Can't say enough about the convenience of having the list of 999 foods pre-programmed in the scale. Easy to input, fast to see how many calories, fat, and many other other micro nutrients you are consuming.
Unlike some other customers who thought the display is hard to see, I see it perfectly. Also, please do not complain that the scale cannot measure the nutritional value of any and every food you put on it. It is a scale, not a magic scale. It cannot possibly know exactly how much of what you put in the food while you were cooking, you'll need a lab for that.
Having this scale has been a huge wake up call for me. As I suspected, I was eating much more than I thought I was. My serving was sometimes 2-3 times larger than the intended serving. I have seriously cut down on overeating and mainly thanks to the scale have lost about 6 lbs in the last month without being hungry. I am just choosing better foods and staying within my daily caloric limit.
I would highly recommend it as a prudent investment in your health. Do you pay a reasonable amount now, or do you pay later, many times over, at the doctor's office?
Customer Review: EatSmart Digital Nutrition Scale: Good & not so good Summary: 3 Stars
I looked at many digital nutrition scales online before purchasing this one. Having Type I Diabetes and being a "carb" counter, it was time for an update and I kept going back to this one and was looking forward to using it. I thought I wanted all the bells and whistles it has to offer. While I like the general size and design for weighing, especially the ease of the tare feature, from then on it goes downhill for me. Visually, I am having great difficulty and my husband, who has excellent eye sight agrees - it is tough to read the LCD display which is considerably smaller than it appears online. Also, it gives so much information that I have found I'm having to ignore what isn't essential for me and fccus on what information I mostly need - carbs plus calories and fats or protein plus calories and fats, etc. You have to go through a progression of button pushing and data entry to get data beyond calories - i.e. carbs and fats. And, feedback is given via different window "groups" of 4 you have to scroll through to get what you want. It just takes so long my food is getting cold or my family impatient while I'm trying to get the information I need for dosing and recordkeeping. I find myself getting frustrated by the whole method as it is, for me, more laborious than I ever anticipated. Then, there is the option of entering information from the food label - one of the aspects I was especially interested in. Maybe it will get easier. That was a big selling point for me and I find the marketing misleading as I thought once I entered all the information from the nutrition label, it would add it to the memory "up to 99". Well, that is not how it works. It will keep items in its memory for counting for a day or week. But, it doesn't keep those products permanently in its memory that I can figure out. So, it's okay but not as user friendly as I thought it would be from all the positive reviews I read - and I do read them.
Customer Review: It's great if it works...update Summary: 4 Stars
This scale is actually a very nice scale and when it works it works wonderfully! I bought one in May and last week it just stopped working. So, I called the company and they sent me out another one. They were very attentive and only asked for my amazon.com order number. I got the scale in the next few days and didnt have to send back the broken one, though I still have it just in case. Well, the new one arrived as promised. It doesnt work either :-( I am very disappointed in this as I really like this product. The buttons are a little small to press if your fingers are fat, but other than that it was great to use. I really liked the nutrional label setting and I could put away my calculator. I sent an email to the vp of the company (he sent his card with the replacement scale), but havent heard anything back from him as of yet. It is the weekend, though, so I dont expect to hear anything till early next week. I am really hoping he sends another one out and that this one works b/c I really like this product. I gave it a one star b/c the first scale stopped working and the second one was delivered not working...very disappointing.
The vp of the company called me the following week and I sent the second scale back. He sent me another replacement scale and reimbursed me for the cost of shipping it back to him. I will say that the customer support from this company is very good. I have had nothing but good conversations with the VP William and am completely satisfied with the outcome.
The second replacement scale is working just fine, all the buttons work, and it is easy to use. I really like this product. The best thing it does for me is figure out the cals from the nutrition label for the serving size you have.
I recommend this product b/c it's just really easy to use and the support from the company is A+/.
