Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EZ Off Jar OpenerCustomer Review: Never hurt your hands opening a jar again! Summary: 5 Stars
$15 seemed like a steep price to me, but with all of the 5-star reviews, I bit.
It's fantastic. Sure, it's a disc of plastic with what appear to be saw teeth on one side to grip/dig into the cap of the item you are trying to open, but it works- every single time. I bought one for myself and one for my mom- a long time sufferer of arthritis. No more torn hand ligaments or stiff joints for either of us!
Short summary:
Pros
+ low profile, can easily be installed under a cabinet and out of view
+ requires much less effort than any other device I've tried - it's definitely not effort-free though. If you are disabled in some way preventing you from normally opening any jars/bottles at all- this is not going to enable you to do so, it just makes opening things much easier than it was before.
+ OPENS EVERYTHING I'VE TRIED (note: have not tried nail polish bottles but that is next!)
Cons
- price- a bit steep. Priced at $10, I would have been much less hesitant to try it
- saw teeth are sharp and could cut you if you weren't paying attention
- damages some lids of items it opens- it leaves claw marks and dents in some of my jar lids- just a heads up in case you wanted to use this on anything to be used for gift giving or decorative purposes
- requires screw mounting into your cabinet- the sticky pad will NOT hold it in place (mine just fell :p )
Customer Review: A Product that Lives Up to Its Name Summary: 5 Stars
The problem with kitchen gadgets that claim you can do something easier is that they usually don't. I've been looking for a device that could open twist top caps on water bottles to make it easier for those in my household who don't have the grip or strength to do the task.
The EZ Off Jar Opener was just the thing I needed. It opens twist caps off easily. It is also very effective in opening jar lids that requires the strength of "The Hulk" to open them. Now you don't need to call your significant other to assist you in opening jars; you don't need to get a cloth to wrap it around the lid; you don't need to use those clumsy "oil filter" removal devices; and best of all, it opens a huge variety of jars with just a simple twist.
Installation is easy enough; you secure the unit under your kitchen cabinet with three supplied screws. If you aren't handy with tools you can just ask a friend or family member to help you. I did the installation in less than 2 minutes using a battery operated screw driver.
The relatively expensive price of this little gadget may be a bit high but after you use it the first couple of times you'll realize that the frustration and inconvenience it saves you will more than justify the price.
I highly recommend this product to anyone who hates fighting with difficult to open jars and twist caps.
Customer Review: Ditto! Summary: 5 Stars
I have never seen a product rating of 100% raves--with a reasonable number of reviews--before. Thanks to prior reviewers for getting me to buy this. It is really excellent! It was VERY easy to install with its adhesive pad holding it in place. The 3 screws included are the perfect size even for our thin wood "came-wth-the-house" cabinets. The unit is VERY strongly made, with a toothed steel opener bar that could open a tank turret (6" maximum diameter). I expect this thing to pass down to future generations!
There are similar, cheaper items available which may be just as good, but they are for much smaller size lids. No point in skimping on this as the big jars are the hardest to open.
One problem for me is that due to a rotator cuff tear it is often difficult for me to raise a jar to reach the undercabinet mounted opener. Not a flaw in the opener at all. My wife loves it!
I am buying another one for a friend who has to cook one-handed.
Customer Review: Great for people with arthritis!! Summary: 5 Stars
I wish I could give this TEN stars. My husband just installed it for me, and it is WONDERFUL.
I can open anything now--and I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands! This requires no gripping like handheld tools do, but gives you amazing leverage. If you can hold a jar, now you can open a jar.
I immediately tried it with several different sizes of jars, including a tightly sealed plastic drink bottle that always hurts my hands (and that I used to get my husband to open for me). I was able to open one instantly! And my hands didn't hurt at all!!
I absolutely love this product. We installed it in five minutes (adhesive tape that comes with it, plus two screws). It attached easily to the underside of our kitchen counter, and you can't even tell it's there! So the kitchen still looks exactly the same but I have my secret weapon--I can open anything without help!
Customer Review: Independence & ease even in power outages Summary: 5 Stars
No more asking those with strong hands to open things and it works even when the power goes out!
I have a degenerative disorder that makes, at times, twisting even a door knob challenging. One of these jar openers came with our house and it's been a wonder of ease for a decade. Everything from tiny vanilla bottles to monster church picnic sized jars. My friends have these electric contraptions taking up space on their counters that are a pain to use when the power is on and useless when the power is out.
There are several similar products on Amazon. However, when it became apparent my grandmother in-law needed help this is the one we ordered. When it came it looked to be just as sturdy and well made as the one we have and is made here in the US! Delightful.
