Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of EARTHBOX GARDEN KIT GREEN Customer Review: Beware- Weak Staking System Before - NOW MADE WEAKER Summary: 3 Stars I ordered 10 on wheels with staking systems directly from Earth Box website as it was cheaper and I negotiated a "volume discount". There are many options with the Earthbox 1. plain box 2. Box with wheels 3. Box with wheels and staking system 4. Frost cover 5. Watering system 6. All types of covers Pro or Con 1. The staking system forces the wheels from under the box to sticking out both sides of the box. If space is an issue, the extra wheel space on both box sides could be a problem. Pro 1. The boxes are deep 2. Easy to assemble----SIMPLE SIMPLY SIMPLE. Unbelievably simple. Take it with you when you move-EASILY. 3. Easy to roll around 4. Easy to plant in 5. Looks attractive 6. Take it with you when you move homes/ apartments 7. If you don't need a good staking system, this is a great box. Con 1. No instructions provided. I googled for the instructions anyway and found a pdf file instruction. 2. Netting has to be used between staking posts instead of an all wire (more permanent) system. Netting replacement costs about $4 each plus S/ H. 3. In my research, the staking system is the weak link-bends easily-I purchased it knowing this and used wooden dowels inside the tubes. 4 BIG CON. The Earthbox itself comes with 4 casters. Their staking system is EXPENSIVE because consumers have to buy staking kit which is 2 plastic box brace holders, 2 small plastic/ with screw stake holders and 2 more casters as well as the aluminum posts/ connectors and cheap net thing that will have to be replaced eventually instead of just making a STAKING SYSTEM that fits inside the existing rolling box. 5. BEWARE!!! What I didn't know was the company remedied the weak stake system problem by ELIMINATING the 2nd horizontal bar making it the same height but WITHOUT the stabilizing middle horizontal bar. Yet, mysteriously, the price was not lowered despite the fact the company is saving the cost of 3 aluminum rods and 4 connectors. If consumers want a taller staking system now, they must buy it separately. When I received my 10 boxes, I called and told them I was short aluminum tubes. The company eventually sent them to me only because I pointed out their picture shows 2 horizontal bars not one and THAT is what I though I was buying. 6. WARNING! IF you buy the staking system, CALL and find out if you are buying the 1 or 2 horizontal bar system. Since Earthbox blew it with their staking system, I ordered 4 more boxes from gardenersupplycompany on-line to expand my garden. 19 Apr 10 - Just purchased 4 wheels, 4 Self-Watering Patio Planter, Green boxes and 4 HUGE tomato cages from Garden's Supply Company. Don't buy the kit which comes with heavy dirt (you have to pay shipping for) and tomato cage and box/ caster's extra. I purchased 4 boxes, 4 caster sets and 4 HUGE tomato cages separately with a 15% discount. Go to retailmenot and get coupon code. Pro 1. The wheels stay under the box (not stick out side taking up space) 2. Their staking system is very tall and sturdy and all wire. No cheap Earthbox type net that eventually tears/ rots. 3. If box kept outside (rain) people must CUT OFF the tips of these 2 "volcano" things sticking up inside the box. These are the overflow releases. When water saturation reaches the top, the rain water flows into the holes and outside the box onto the ground. 4. The water on the bottom of the box is not accessible to mosquitoes as mosquitoes cannot enter the cut off "volcano ends" covered by dirt. With the Earthboxes, there is a hole cut in side of box mosquitoes can enter the bottom of the box where the water is. I have NEVER had a mosquito problem with either Earthbox or Tomatobox and I live in Florida. Pro or con 1. Plastic wheels are smaller than Earthbox plastic wheels BUT the stem is thicker than Earthbox's. Not sure if this is good or bad. Con 1. Cheap plastic cone water gauge thing sticks out of box with a plastic ball and stick inside it to serve as a float telling people when to stop putting water in the box. It has a flip top but it the lid is hard to keep down. 2. If someone has to remove the dirt, be VERY CAREFUL removing the water gauge. The black bottom WILL come off and the tiny black plastic stick inside the gauage is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I never found mine but the company was VERY GOOD about sending me another. Overall, I like the look and convenience of the Earth box over these 4 Tomato boxes boxes but I do NOT like Earthbox's staking system. Fix that and they have a perfect product. Make your own staking system. I have 1 extra Tomato Box staking system which I will try to put into the Earthbox when I have the time. When water is added, the moist potting mix slowly conducts the diluted nutrients down the concentration gradient to the plant roots, which absorb optimal amounts of nutrients at any given time. Water and Fertilizer Conservation: The EarthBox's plastic cover drastically reduces the water evaporation rate and returns condensed water vapor to the potting mix. As the plants draw water from the reservoir, they consume only what they need to stay healthy. Plants cannot be over-watered or under-watered if the reservoir is kept full. The plastic cover also prevents fertilizer from being diluted or washed away by rain. In addition... Years of research have yielded the optimal number and arrangement of each type of vegetable, fruit, herb or flower for healthy growing. Casters enable home gardeners to: (1) move the EarthBox outside during the day and inside at night - extending the growing season by planting earlier and harvesting later and (2) move the EarthBox around the patio or deck to increase or decrease the amount of time spent in the sun. Plastic inhibits the growth of disease-causing mold, as well as the invasion of plant-eating pests.
