Customer Review: Wanted to love it

This toaster is not entirely worthless. If you plug it in and turn the knob, it will heat up inside. If you have inserted your bread or bagel in advance of turning the knob, these will heat as well. If you've turned the knob just exactly enough, you may end up with a baked good that is fairly well toasted.
The other thing this toaster has going for it is looks. It's red, that's cool. It has a pleasant shape and some stainless steel. The logo is subtle and pressed in. If you're like me, that is about all the good news.
Here's what I didn't like:
1. The design of the knob that starts the toasting means you are forever guessing at what "number" or "dash" to aim for to get your preferred level of toasting. Yes, there is a little knob/lever (more on that later) to pop the toast out and see if it's done yet, but if you use the same kind of bread regularly it would be nice to just set the toaster once and know you're going to get the right result instead of almost the right result. We regularly got slight underdone or overdone toast by "missing the mark" just a little bit, even when we thought we knew what we were aiming for.
2. The knob seems to be friction or spring operated, and it feels like you are "cranking" something that then unwinds as the toaster engages and timer proceeds. This is not an altogether bad feeling and gives the toaster a quaint vibe, but it also feels like a part that will eventually wear out. Maybe it will take a long time to wear out, I don't know.
3. The lever to lift the toast doesn't spring back into place, and it also lifts two metal bars at an angle to slots. Whatever you put in gets pushed toward you (toward the lever) as it gets pushed up, and your food can be "squished" a bit. This seems like another (perhaps minor) design issue. Toasters that have slots where you lift the toast "straight up" will not have this problem, however.
4. There is a "1-slice" (left slot only) or "2-slice" (both slots) selector switch. This sounds like a feature, but in daily use this red button blends in with the red toaster shell and there's nothing to remind you to set it properly. Result? Just leave it on "2-slice" all the time so you don't get one piece toasted and one not toasted.
5. It doesn't have a "bagel mode" where only the inside or outside heating elements come on. If you like your bagels or english muffins toasted all the way around, this is not a problem.
6. The crumb tray feels super light and cheap (made out of what appears to be rolled/folded sheet metal). This is minor, but for a toaster that costs this much it was disconcerting.
I wanted to love this toaster, but it let me down.
If you're like me, you may love my new, new toaster, the Breville BTA820XL Die-Cast 2-Slice Smart Toaster. It's not red, but it's fantastic in all the ways that this Dualit is not. "Smart" indeed. :)
