We purchased this because our teenagers would sometimes not get our upright freezer door closed and the items in the door (usually ice cream) would melt and create a huge mess. We purchased this so that if the door was not completely closed it would alert us with an alarm. So far this hasn't happened, however, when putting groceries up and having the door open longer than usual the alarm does go off until the correct temperature range is achieved. We placed the probe on the top shelf of the door closer to the hinged side and placed the unit on top of the freezer so that the wire wouldn't get tangled when placing items in the freezer. So far it seems to work well.

Description of Digital Alarm Thermometer

ThermoWorks, the maker of the famous Thermapen, offers this quality fridge/freezer alarm. The RT801 is a great low-cost alarm thermometer. Perfect for monitoring refrigerators, freezers, coolers, chillers and all other types of cold storage systems. It's also great for aquariums, terrariums, incubators, and hundreds of other uses wherever you want to make sure an acceptable temperature range is maintained. Simply set the desired high and low alarm temperatures and position the external probe in place and you've got a monitoring system for your critical environment. Use it as a safety alarm or to notify you when a desired target temperature is reached. If your alarm limits are exceeded, an audible beep-beep sounds for 5 seconds every minute. During the alarm condition a visual indicator flashes on the screen. If the temperature returns to normal, the visual and audible alarm will stop. The Max/Min function will continue to show you the highest and lowest temperatures reached so you will know that an alarm has occurred. Great for pharmaceuticals, food storage, environmental conditions, laboratory, industrial use, hobbies, etc...
