Customer Review: Messy, ineffective, AVOID this product

Diatamaceous Earth is marketed as a product that's non-toxic and safe for those looking to avoid pesticides and get rid of their bedbug or other insect problems. When reading reviews about the product I noted that it was effective and that it was going to be messy. As it turns out, only one of the former is true. Diatamaceous earth is definitely messy, but even more ineffective. I purchased diatamaceous earth for my bedbug problem several weeks ago. Having bedbugs is an extremely traumatizing experience. The image of tiny little vampires crawling into my bed every night sucking away at my blood was the source of my recent insomnia. I tried diatamaceous earth with Pronto (a canned spray) and steaming with a commercial steamer. I steamed, cleaned, sprayed EVERY inch of my house. This was followed with a very generous application of diatamaceous earth in any areas which may have been potential pathways of the bedbugs. I waited and waited and to no avail. The problem seemed to get worse; which was distressing as my bed bug problem was not that bad to begin with. Now, my final solution has been to hire an exterminator, we'll see how that turns out tomorrow. DO NOT USE DIATAMACEOUS EARTH. The stuff is marketed as non-toxic but its very bad for your lungs; its on the level of silica gel in this respect. You can not use simple dust masks (silica is small enough to get through the dust masks) as people have mentioned-- you need to use commercial respirators. Only people with professional experience should handle this stuff. Do not place this stuff in your bed or on anything you especially like keeping. Its very hard to get rid of and NOT good for you. Heed my warning, if you want to get rid of these little blood suckers, spend the money and get an exterminator. I live in NYC and understand that the experience is traumatizing, but it's worth the money for professional help and spare yourself from unnecessary exposure to silica present in the diatamaceous earth. There is NO cure for silicosis and this stuff should be handled with utmost care. I've had more problem getting rid of the diatamaceous earth than the bed bugs now. I've tried vacuuming, brooming, and mopping and there are still remnants of this stuff floating around and embedded in my stuff. I ended up throwing out my bed set because it was ruined because of the diatamaceous earth. Oh, it also dries out your skin. If that isn't enough to keep you away, good luck to you.
