Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Deni 10400 Quick-n-Easy 10-4-Quart Convection OvenCustomer Review: Decent product, but not that useful Summary: 3 Stars
I have been dreaming about owning a tabletop oven like this for some time. I was looking for a way to make a whole meal in one fell swoop without having to watch it every second. After very thorough research I decided on the Deni. For the price, it is a nice item. There are many off-brands that look similar, plus also the one advertised on late nite TV, but research on others indicated that the plastic cover often cracked and broke. This one has a nice glass lid and body, which makes it very sturdy, but also very heavy. Others have commented about its heaviness, but I didn't think it would be an issue for me. Turns out, it IS very heavy to move around and this lid is cumbersome because the mechanics and the cord are attached to the lid. The saving grace on this model is that it comes with a lid holder that hangs from one of the handles which allows you to place the lid there. Without that, it would be impossible to use because the lid gets fairly hot and you need somewhere to place it while it's still plugged in and you are checking on the food.
Speaking of hot, the whole unit does put off quite a bit of heat. It must sit on some kind of large, very protective heat shield to prevent damage to your countertop. Considering its size and the amount of heat coming off of it, I didn't have anything large enough to accommodate that. I tried to put 2 raised trivets under it so the heat could dissipate, but that wasn't too ssuccessful because of the way the legs/base is made. I'm sure something could be found to work fine, but maybe not what you have on hand...
On to the cooking aspect of the device...
I cooked chicken breasts, asparagus and baked potatoes in mine all at once as a test. I wanted to see if I could find a setting that would allow me to set it and walk away. What I determined from my test was that each type of food required different cooking times. The baked potatoes the longest, then the chicken, then the asparagus. I had to remove the lid and add each one at staggered points. The potatoes took 40 min., the chicken about 25, and the asparagus 10 minutes. All of the items were suppose to be cooked directly on the wire racks, not in a pan, so the air can circulate. The chicken and the potatoes came out a little dry; the asparagus was fine. However, it was alot of work removing the heavy lid and manuevering down inside the bowl getting things arranged and turned. It took 5 times of fiddling with it. When the meal was done, getting the food out was also rather difficult as the bowl is still quite warm even after the cooling period. Reaching down inside the bowl to remove the items I was afraid I'd burn myself.
One pleasant surprise was that it has a self-cleaning feature. I didn't know that when I ordered it and didn't discover it until I had already cleaned it up, so I can't comment on how well it works. Cleaning it by hand wasn't bad, except that, again, the glass bowl is VERY heavy and slippery when wet. It wouldn't fit in my dishwasher so I washed it in the sink. However, it kept slipping out of my hand. I was afraid I'd drop it and break it so I finally had my husband hold the weight of it while I scrubbed and rinsed the inside. Not a big deal if you have help, but if you don't it might be another story.
So, in summary,
Pros:
- well-priced
- glass body and lid; less prone to breakage
- comes with lid holder
- would work well for one item, such as a roast or chicken when you need a second oven
Cons:
- heavy and difficult to manuever
- wouldn't fit in dishwasher
- food can't be in a pan, so juices and coatings won't work in this device
- each type of food requires different cooking times so must constantly remove lid, etc.
- cord is attached to lid which is cumbersome
- takes up considerable space
- food was on the dry side
In the end, I returned this item. It just wasn't going to do what I wanted, which was allow me to cook several items at one time without babysitting. However, if you need a second oven, particularly for one item (such as a roast or small turkey) this could be a nice addition to your kitchen. Me, I'll go back to using my crock pot, stovetop and oven. It's just easier that way.
