Customer Review: Appealing design but shameful performance...

I've had this 4 slice toaster for a year now and I have to admit I rarely put it to use. I must confess I purchased it on an impulse because of it's appealing retro design and not based on it's performance. Unfortunately like everything else these days it's manufactured in China and assembled with cheap parts. If you peek inside during operation the heating elements appear thin and fragile and refuse to burn with enough intesity or in an evenly fashion to adequately brown toast within a reasonable period of time. Also, considering the lackluster power from the heating elements, the extra wide toasting slots tend to contribute to it's sluggish toasting performance by inefficiently allowing a dramatic amount of heat loss during operation. For example, try baking a loaf of bread with the oven door open and that should give the general idea and downfall of the DeLonghi RT400 4-Slice Retro Toaster.
Although, if looks and appeal is all that matters to the consumer, you should have a winner..

We saw this product in a store and decided we must have it to replace our toaster oven....we only used the toaster oven as a toaster. Our children presented the DeLonghi toaster to us as a Christmas gift and we were thrilled....thrilled, that is, until we tried to use it. One side would not go down. Much to our delight, we were able to exchange it. With great anticipation, we unwrapped the replacement, read all the instructions again, plugged it in and put in 4 slices of bread. We pushed the levers down and waited...and waited...and waited. The toaster did not heat up....well, we said, it must be a bad plug...we tried another plug which we were sure was perfectly functional. THE TOASTER DID NOT HEAT UP. When we returned the second one, we opted for another brand. Thus, the rating...if zero stars was an option, we would have used it. I got this toaster as a bridal shower present. I didn't really remember adding it to my list but, hey! got a toaster, might as well use it.
My husband uses it everyday for his breakfast, I use once in a while for my bagels and it does GREAT. He has his settings in one of the sides and I have mine on the other side - since he likes burned and I like it very light. You can use both sides at the same time with different temperatures and it toasts great, the way you wanted.
It is a little big for my taste, but I imagine every 4-slice toaster is probably as big as this one - unless is the long style ones.
2 cons: The material on the buttons is made with metallic painted plastic. And it's a little hard to pull out certain breads depending on its size from the slots. Other than that I recommend this toaster!

Have had unit for several months. Variable settings are a waste since only at max or near max does the bread actually toast. This is second unit having had to return first due defects.The small plastic indicator lights tend to get pushed in at the slightest bump from any other appliance, so they become worthless (however very pretty when new). Even though we keep ours spotless clean, several bread pieces on one side have started to get stuck almost causing fire. This is precisely what I wanted to avoid from cheaper units and is dangerous. Was great when new and we used only English toasting bread, but quality over time in terrible. Will use as decoration, perhaps with a pole and lamp shade, might be able to sell it at a garage sale as a decorators oddity.

I was disappointed at the quality of this toaster. The handles behaved tentatively, one side sliding down loosely..too loosely, the other too tight. The exterior became very hot, so I would never let a child or anyone whose mind might wander go near this item during or within 10 minutes after use. The interior holding device clamped so tightly, soft bread broke and lodged inside. Any item smaller than a standard piece of white bread had to be handle lifted out, and English muffins still required fingers for removal. The crumb trays are shallow and small, so cleaning must be done after each use. Perhaps I am lazy, but I prefer appliances to serve me, not cater to them. Addendum..11 mos.later, little red 'lights' over control buttons just fell inside toaster.
