Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Delonghi DCG49 Burr Coffee GrinderCustomer Review: Not worth the money or effort... Summary: 1 Stars
(review written Novemeber 2009)
My Delonghi DCG49 was purchased about 4 years ago, used it for a few months, then put it in storage. I fired it up today for the first time since then, and soon remembered why I put it away...
As noted in other reviews:
* the unit needs to be shaken to get the beans flowing to the grinder
* the unit gets clogged, often. WITH THE UNIT UNPLUGGED I use a toothpick to scrape clean the rectangular opening where the ground coffee exits the grinder.
* the unit holds only enough beans for about an 8 cup pot worth of coffee. 12 cuppers, unless you like your coffee weak, you will need to grind a full hopper of beans, refill, and grind some more.
* emptying the ground coffee from the catch bin can be messy. Over time, static electricity builds up, and the ground coffee can end jumping in any number of inconvenient directions. Thoroughly washing and drying the bin seems to help with this.
This unit does look good, but isn't worth the hassle. I plan to replace it soon, perhaps with a manual hand-crank grinder.
Description of Delonghi DCG49 Burr Coffee GrinderDelonghi burr coffee grinder with dual safe system. The grinding wheels stop if the ground coffee container or bean container is removed. This versatile coffee grinder prepares beans for any method of coffee brewing. Three different grind settings offer a range of grinds from coarse for coffee percolators to medium for drip coffeemakers to fine for espresso makers. Whichever grind you prefer, the burr grinding wheels always produces grounds of a uniform texture. The transparent lid easily pops off to load the grinder with whole beans. A side button grinds up to 16 tablespoons of coffee into the transparent container below with either a constant or pulsing touch. The grounds container sticks a bit upon removal, but has a lift-off lid to keep grounds from spilling out while you are tugging at it. The upper grinding mechanism also detaches for easy cleaning. For safety, the grinding wheels stop if the grounds or whole bean containers are not in place. DeLonghi offers a one-year limited warranty on defects in materials and workmanship for this burr coffee grinder. --Cristina Vaamonde
