Customer Review: Indoor grilling without a wire brush...

I purchased this after 3 agonizing weeks of searching for a multi-mode panini press slash george foreman style grill slash griddle. I really was sold on the size of the grill surface, as well as the glass lid. After i unpacked it, i realized that it might take a bit to clean it, if it ever got really dirty. These fears we mostly unwarranted, as i will explain. I took the grill out of the packaging and washed the grill plate as per the instructions - mind you, the instructions say not to submerge the grill plate, nor to use a dishwasher - so be warned! After assembling it on my counter, i got some marinated carne asada (flap steak) out, and preheated the grill using setting "5" - until turning it to 4 clicked it off (meaning perfect heat!) I then lightly sprayed non stick oil on the surface (i'm paranoid about non-stick surfaces!) - and applied the meat. Instantly, sizzling occurred, and the wonderful smell of beef with seasoning hit the air. I placed the lid on top, and let it cook for 5 minutes, turned the heat back up to five, and flipped the steaks over, waiting until the grill got back up to full heat before lowering the temp back down to four. The grill marks on the steaks were very cool looking, and the smell was enticing.
After another 8 minutes of cooking, i tested the meat, by placing it into my mouth. And it was actually better than the asada i made on the BBQ grill i have! The steam and lid seem to combine in a fashion that allows the meat to stay moist while still getting that seared/caramelized flavor that makes grilling so popular.
On to clean-up. This is an intricate grill plate design, there is one element that runs in an M shape the length of the plate, so the top surface has about six billion little pill shaped holes for the drippings to fall through. I hit it with a soapy sponge and to my surprise it was really easy to clean! Since the first time i grilled, i stopped caring about the stuff in the holes not getting clean, because when you preheat the grill, it tends to fall off, and if not, a rat-tail-rolled bit of paper towel will ease your mind - it's better than trying to scrub each hole individually after cooking on the grill. The drip pan is non-stick as well, standard cleaning supplies work great on it, and the glass cleans fairly easily too... i say fairly because it is heavy and some may find it difficult to hold and clean at the same time. I am assuming you can put the entire thing in a dishwasher, although it will not fit in the one in my apartment, not enough clearance for the top fins to spin. As i mentioned earlier, the instructions say not to, but i can't see any reason it would damage it, as long as you made sure the electrical connection area was dry before using it again.
All in all, this was a great purchase. it has a LARGE footprint, so make sure you have the storage space for it (we put ours on a "bar" behind the stove, along with all of our other electric appliances for our kitchen) - it only stands a couple of inches tall, though. so you should be able to shuffle things around to make it fit.
