Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Debbie Meyer Green BagsCustomer Review: Buyer Beware. This product does not work. Summary: 1 Stars
I know this item caught your eye a few times, both on TV and online. But I need to pass on that this product does not work. Do not waste your money. In fact, the bags tend to make some produce rot faster than when stored in other containers. Maybe this mystery green film absorbs the gasses released by produce as it ages, but it does not absorb or control moisture. It's virtually impossible to dry some types of produce, like berries, mushrooms, lettuce and sprouts. Even in storing bananas, the claims are false. The bananas release a sticky film (fructose, I imagine) that sticks to the inside of the bag. I believe the bananas rotted quicker once this happened. I am still using up my green bags so I don't feel like a complete idiot, but I have a feeling that I will abandon this fruitless (no pun intended) effort and resort to using them for pooper-scooper bags in the very near future.
Customer Review: love them, on my second set!! $$ saver Summary: 5 Stars
I am so surprised by all the people who say they don't work. These save me SO MUCH MONEY. You do need to follow the directions; don't put moist vegetables in there (i.e., don't rinse them first and then bag). I've been using them for over two years and at first I was skeptical but I can say that without a doubt, they extend the shelf life of produce in our fridge (I haven't tried using them for counter top storage). Works great on lettuce, broccolli, sweet peppers, squash, celery, carrots. We're a household of two so we don't go through vegetables quickly enough sometimes and I can't live without these bags. I'm sure there are other alternatives- anything that absorbs ethylene gas will work, I'm just in the habit of using these. I even use one ofthese as a bag for my cuttings from the ends of vegetables and then make a stock once a week.
Customer Review: What a rip off!! Summary: 1 Stars
With all of the money lost on produce going bad, I was anxious to try these bags. Note: I did not read these reviews prior to my purchase. I bought the bags along with some beautiful strawberries and grapes yesterday. I did not wash them and followed the directions to a tee (folded the bag over, made sure there was no moisture inside the bag, etc). My strawberries and grapes were already starting to mold and rot THIS MORNING. I could not believe it. I wish I would have just put them in a regular Ziploc baggie. Luckily, the store I bought them from took them right back. I am validated in my feelings about these bags judging by all of the negative reviews. If you have purchased these, get your money back!! You have not done anything wrong!! The bags just simply do not work!! They are being marked down for a reason!!
Customer Review: Seem to work 3 Stars
The main reason I purchased this item was to keep bananas from literally rotting 2 days after I bought them. It is day 5 and the bananas are just now starting to show some age....however...what I was not prepared for was the water condensation that develops in these bags once you close them. The bananas themselves were dry when put in the bag but the moisture from the fruit itself must cause the condensation. So. The bananas are not brown but they are softer, and wet. I am now worried about mold developing on the bananas! I am going to try them on other fruits and berries but berries mold very quickly so I don't see how something that causes condensation like that will prevent mold. Who knows. I will give it a try! I don't think I would purchase these again and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. JMO.
Customer Review: BUYER BEWARE! Summary: 1 Stars
When I learned how they work, I thought, "Won't the ethylene gas the produce give off get trapped in the bag? How will they stay fresher longer, then?"
Bur I decided to give them a try anyway. I mean, they have to work or they wouldn't sell, right?
Well, BUYER BEWARE! The fruit did stay looking pretty much longer than it's original shelf life, but when I opened up the fruit, it was spoiled on the inside! And it spoiled much faster than without the bag (but they looked perfect on the outside). All the fruit, veggies, and greens were wasted. And all the money I spent on the food and the bags, too! So I guess that verified my initial theory of trapped ethylene gas.
Seems like it's going to be another one of those fly-by-night make a quick buck schemes.
