Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Debbie Meyer Green Bags

Customer Review: DON'T BUY, SAVE UR MONEY
Summary: 1 Stars

I was very skeptical about these bags when I saw them on TV commercial. Then one day, I saw it at the store "on sale" so I tried them ($9.99 for 25 bags). I had to find out for myself it they really work. It's true that the ethylene gas is the culprit to rotting fruits and vegetables faster. BUT, these bags DO NOT help much.

I tested them with the bananas. Yes, they don't look brown after 5-7 days, but they are very soft on the inside. At first, I was like "wow, they do work!" but then I took a bite out of the bananas "ewww, rotten taste". I rather used my old trick, once they start having freckles, I put them in the fridge. Sure they turn brown on the skin, but they taste great on the inside.

I tried them on strawberries, they caused them to rot faster! It's false advertising I'm telling you.

The trick to fresher lettuce, don't buy these bags and save your money. Just use a plastic knife and carve out the cord of the lettuce. Keep them dry in your fridge wrapped in 2-3 pieces of paper towels (no plastic bag) and VOILA! Longer lasting lettuce! The cord is the ethylene gas producing part of the lettuce.

I'm a vegetarian and I like to find ways to keep my veggies last longer and I should have saved my money not buying these bags!

Customer Review: Very good item for the most part...
Summary: 4 Stars

The bags work on everything I have put in them except for bananas. It actually speeds up the ripeness, I dont' know why.

I also noticed that the bags will not work for food that is starting to get too ripe. If one goes bad in the bag it will make all of them go bad pretty quick .

Nothing has lasted for 30 days, more like 14.

The bags stored on the counter get wet inside, I'm not sure why. I put in paper towels all around the bag becuase the company states you are not suppose to let the inside of the bags get wet.

The bags in the refrigerator get wet a lot more. I use paper towels for them also.
It is work to put paper towels all around the inside of the bags but it is worth it to me.

The company states you can only use a bag 10 times. I'm not sure how much I have used them but I can tell at 3 months, it's time to get more.

I am not sure how to clean the inside of the bags, I'm not sure if the company tells how to do this.

I have been just rinsing them out with water and letting them dry.
Most of the time they don't get dirty and I don't have to clean them at all before the next use.

Customer Review: Good product when used correctly
Summary: 4 Stars

After reading all the reviews, I'm not sure that people are using these correctly. Not their fault, the instructions are pretty bad.

There are certain types of fruits and vegetables that are going to work better than others. Greens work great. I had a head of lettuce that lasted 3 weeks in one before I ate it all. Celery, cucumbers, broccoli... all last longer. Bananas look good on the outside, but can be bad on the inside. Fruits that are sensitive to moisture (such as strawberries and peaches) should probably not be stored in them.

Second, moisture is the kiss of death in these bags. What I do is put a folded up paper towel in with the fruits/veggies, and then put them in the fridge so that the produce is resting on top of the paper towel. Replace the paper towel once a week (or more frequently if it looks moist inside the bag).

I pretty much only use it to store greens, bell peppers, squash.. Works great for me. I have to throw out less produce since I started using these. But again, it's gotta be the right produce in the right (non-moist) conditions.

Customer Review: Eh.
Summary: 2 Stars

I gave 2 stars rather than 1, b/c they did work a LITTLE.

The trick to keeping your stuff super fresh...is you have to take them out of the bag and wipe out the bag every day. That's a lot of maintenance. Bagged items in the fridge keep longer than bagged items on the counter. I leave my bananas and tomatoes on the counter...they lasted at most two days longer than normal.

Moisture starts to collect on the inside of the bag almost immediately. The box does say to wipe out any moisture...but it doesn't tell you that the moisture is ever-present. More moisture for counter top items than frdige items (the cooler in your fridge works like an A/C and de-humidifies the air inside the fridge).

I also got a hold of something called the greens keeper. It's fabric and works great for my leafy greens. I have been using that with good success (fresh leaves after a week), and just stick to buying less items at a time when it comes to things like bananas, tomatoes, and other food that quickly expire.
