Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi XR640 Retro Toaster OvenCustomer Review: Funny... Summary: 4 Stars
... that's how I'd describe my relationship with this toaster oven in comparison with the reviews I'm reading here. We've had this thing for what seems to be 2 years now. I got onto a major cooking kick, and I found that I despise using the microwave - nothing tastes right nuked, especially coffee which can even explode if heated too much! Anyway, I much preferred using the conventional oven. Problem is that we live in South Florida. And with the exception of December and January, it's hot as hell down here, and turning on the big oven just makes things worse. Hence why I talked my parents into getting a toaster oven - we had one at work and I enjoyed the simplicity in using it and the lesser amount of heat it generated. So mother and I went toaster oven shopping, and she instantly fell in love with this one because it was retro looking, just like her kitchen that was built in the late 1960s. $160 later, my mother hates the thing for a few minor reasons. First of all, she judges everything by esthetics. Forget that something's a piece of crap or if it never works - if it LOOKS good in a room, she's keeping it there. This is why we have a hamilton beach drink mixer on the counter that they got for their wedding 7 years ago, and it has yet to be used. So when she tried cleaning off the glass on the front of the toaster oven with windex and found that it only made matters worse (in the way of streaks), she became horrified. I warned her that she should have read the instruction booklet first to see how to properly clean it, but she had lost it by then.. women. (can't take offense to that, since I'm one as well) The second reason she dislikes it is because when it toasts, it only top-browns. She doesn't want to have to flip her toast over and turn it back on. Honestly, neither do I. This has been the ONLY thing I have against the toaster oven. Granted, our prior toaster was literally a fire-starter, and we ditched it when it lit my mother's pop tart with flames. So to me, this is still a welcomed improvement - no more wielding a fire extinguisher every time I wanted a frozen waffle! But as for the actual baking and broiling, I've had no problems at all with this thing, and neither has she. Those two things I mentioned (the top-browning and streaked door) are the only two things she has against this appliance, in which she has condemned it to hades. She bought a new retro looking regular toaster from Target about a month ago. Me? I'm planning on snatching the toaster oven up for myself when I move away for college next week. Maybe I just have low standards, with a toaster that doubled as a lighter, and a conventional oven that was installed in the 60s and takes forever to bake or broil... To each his own.
Description of DeLonghi XR640 Retro Toaster OvenThis toaster oven's innovative design makes it stand out in a crowd. But appliances need to be more than just good-looking, performance is key. This large capacity oven is adjustable, can bake, broil, toast, and keep warm, is easy to clean, and has important safety features. Capable of toasting up to six slices of bread at once as well as baking and broiling, this countertop toaster oven comes in handy for everything from breakfast to a midnight snack. It provides 1,500 watts of power for baking a cake in the 9-1/4-by-10-3/4-inch pan that's included, broiling a salmon steak on the baking pan's aluminum broil insert, or toasting a cheese sandwich on the oven's slide-out chrome rack. Both the baking pan and the oven's interior are coated in hard enamel that distributes heat evenly and cleans easily. One nice touch is a stay-cool rubber-handle tool that grips the rack so it can be removed without burning your fingers. For the oven, a thermostat adjusts the temperature from the Keep Warm setting to 450 degrees F, and the toast function has a three-setting browning control with audible tone and automatic shutoff when toasting is complete. Housed in chrome with black and silver accents, the toaster oven contributes the retro styling cool of a '58 Chevy's bright bumper to the kitchen. It measures 16-1/2 inches wide (including stay-cool handles on the bottom), 8-3/4 inches high, and 14 inches deep (including a cord wrap in the rear and chrome handle for the glass door). The oven carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack
