Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker with Self-Refrigerating Compressor

Customer Review: Pretty Good Machine
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this machine based mostly on the reviews here, I googled the model name and searched for it on youtube and didn't really find any other reviews. There is a video on youtube of this ice cream maker in action which was useful, I'll link the youtube video at the end of this review. I just got this machine in today, I ordered it from Sears because it was slightly cheaper after my discounts, but Amazon has a pretty good price.

I'm a big ice cream lover and have owned the freezer bowl style Cuisinart ICE-30BC for the last 16 months, but I wanted to go to a compressor model since everybody says they create a much better tasting ice cream. I searched online researching all the compressor models, after reading for several hours (I really wanted a good machine) it came down to the Cuisinart ICE-50BC and this one, the DeLonghi GM-6000. I picked this one because alot of people mentioned how noisy the Cuisinart ICE-50BC was and that some of the parts felt cheap. I almost went with the Cuisinart compressor model since I already own the Cuisinart feezer bowl type (ICE-30BC) and it works great, but I decided to go with the DeLonghi one. I guess we will see if that was a smart choice in the future after I've used this machine for awhile.

As for the performance of this machine, I created the custard mixture of French Vanilla ice cream last night and put it in the fridge to chill over night in preparation for receiving this ice cream maker today. I just got done making it into ice cream and this machine does a good job. I made a big batch and this ice cream maker finished it in 3 batches, a little over 3 quarts of french vanilla ice cream were made. It took about 25-30 minutes per batch.

The minor annoyances I have which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5:

*The taste of the ice cream is great, but I can't taste the difference between ice cream made in this one and my freezer bowl style Cuisinart ICE-30BC
*The capacity of this machine is around 1.1 quarts (I measured using water), the box this machine comes in says 1.5 quarts
*When you turn the machine off between batches, you have to wait 5 minutes until you can turn it back on, the directions in the manual repeat this several times
*When your batch is done and you untwist the lid and take out the aluminum bowl and then scoop the ice cream into a container, the plastic turning paddle is a real pain to take out, it wants to hold tight and not come out
*The ice cream turning paddle is plastic, it seems to work fine, but for a $200+ machine why not make it aluminum or stainless steel or something? I'd gladly pay more for this part to be made of better quality

Pros:

*Makes great tasting ice cream, I haven't tried making the Italian style Gelato yet but I will soon
*Not very noisy, you couldn't whisper next to it and expect to be heard but you can definitely carry a conversation on with someone in the kitchen while it does its thing
*Easy to cleanup and easy to make ice cream/Gelato

Overall, this machine works great, but I just wish it made more then 1.1 quarts at a time. The ice cream it produces taste great, but it's about the same quality as my freezer bowl style Cuisinart ICE-30BC which is also great. It's not like the ice cream taste difference is night and day between the two machines. I'm thinking the better choice for me probably should have been to just buy another 2qt freezer bowl for my Cuisinart maker instead of buying a new $200+ machine. Alot of people buy compressor ice cream maker models because they don't want to mess around with freezing the bowls for the other models, but I had no problem with that. In fact, I noticed that when I made ice cream with my Cuisinart ICE-30BC that the gel inside the freezer bowl was usually not even melted after I was done, when I shook it there wasn't hardly any liquid that sloshed around.

I would recommend this machine if you do not plan to make bunches of ice cream/Gelato at one time and you do not have the freezer space for a gel canister model like the ICE-30BC, but I think the 2qt Cuisinart ICE-30BC will satisfy most peoples ice cream making needs. These compressor models are nice, but they are not for everybody. If they could create a compressor model with a 2qt capacity, metal ice cream turner, easy to clean, and fast at making ice cream/Gelato for under $300, that would be awesome. If you're trying to decide on buying a compressor model like this one or a frozen gel canister model like the ICE-30BC, just be aware the ice cream taste quality will not be drastically different between the two.

If the links below don't appear it's because Amazon deleted them, just search on youtube for delonghi gelato maker and french vanilla ice cream to find the videos.

Description of DeLonghi GM6000 Gelato Maker with Self-Refrigerating Compressor

You don't have to travel to Italy for delicious authentic gelato. Make it in the comfort of your own home with the new Gelato Maker from DeLonghi. Gelato is a dense mixture with lower fat than ice cream and no added air, which is more rich and flavorful. And with the self-refrigerating compressor, you don't have to wait for your favorite sweet treat. Built-in compressor brings the ingredients to temperatures below freezing, which frozen bowl ice cream makers cannot do. Make multiple batches continuously instead of having to wait to re-freeze the ice cream bowl. The removable stainless steel bowl makes for easy serving and cleanup and the mixing paddle effectively mixes ingredients from top to bottom for perfect consistency. Other highlights include a refrigerant gas that doesn't deplete the ozone layer, transparent lid and recipe book.
