Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi DCU50T DeLonghi DCU50T Ultimate Coffee UrnCustomer Review: Not quite as foolproof to use as Delonghi claims ... Summary: 3 Stars
When people first see this model, they are very impressed by its looks, features, and construction. The printed instructions are clear and easy to follow. Two of these models were purchased for use in a church.
The first Sunday of use, all went well. Only complaint was that the indicator point on the temperature control knob could not be easily seen or felt, so you could not see at a glance what temperature the 'keep warm' setting is. Looks like I'll have to paint a mark on the black knob with some white-out typing correction fluid to highlight the point.
On the second Sunday of use, one of the urns would not percolate correctly. I could hear the percolating, but it would not ever make it to the top - good thing that the urn has a clear glass dome in the outer lid so you can see if percolation is happening. I took the inside basket and perc tube apart and reassembled in case the perc pipe was not seating properly in the perc sump of the urn. All appeared fine - no debris or bent parts and the lower washer on the perc tube was free to move just like Delonghi said it had to be in their instructions. The tube was not plugged nor restricted in any way. The spring on the perc tube was in place (its permanently attached to the tube) as this is what forces the base of the perc tube into the perc well when the coffee basket and outer lid are installed.
I reassembled everything and plugged the urn back in to the electrical. The perc'ing resumed with sound only, just like before. Meanwhile the other urn had been perc'ing merrily away all this time. So I then exchanged the perc tubes between the two urns and that seemed to solve the problem, although it appeared the problematic perc tube did not quite muster up the same amount of percolating force in the second urn. Anyway, when the 'coffee hour' was over and I emptied and washed out the two urns. I closely inspected both perc tubes as well as both perc wells and could not detect any debris, rough edges/surfaces, or bent pieces which would explain why the perc tube would not seat properly in the first urn. I guess I'll see if the problem reoccurs this coming Sunday.
The only other complaint is that the clear coffee level tube was leaking at the base of the tube on one of the urns, but that was easily fixed by hand-tightening the nut at the base of the tube. Lastly, not a complaint but more of an observation - both urns would repeatedly perc periodically during the serving / keep-warm time. I thought this was odd - the separate keep-warm heating element should be capable of doing this. I had the temp set to 190 F. My concern was that the coffee would become too strong tasting if percolation continued. If this happens again, I guess I'll just have to remove the coffee basket and perc tube after it's done perc'ing.
So because of these percolation 'incidents' and the poor marking of the temperature control knob, I'm giving the Delonghi DCU50T a "3" rating instead of a "5" which I feel it otherwise deserves.
Description of DeLonghi DCU50T DeLonghi DCU50T Ultimate Coffee UrnUltimate Coffee Urn Designed and engineered in Italy with durable 18/10 stainless-steel construction and a mirror-finish, this 20- to 50-cup capacity coffee urn serves a crowd with style and includes many convenient features. Its glass-top, easy-open cover allows for watching the coffee brew, yet for childproof operation and to prevent spills the cover also features a special safety lock to keep the lid on tight. A coffee-level indicator shows how much water is in the unit--to prevent running out of coffee unexpectedly--while its unique stainless-steel basket and pump pipe provide a clean coffee taste. "On" and "ready" lights indicate when the coffee is ready to serve, and the adjustable thermostat allows for adjusting the heat between 130 to 210 degrees for the exact temperature preferred. Once the brewing is finished, the coffee urn automatically switches to the warming cycle and keeps coffee at a constant serving temperature. This "keep warm" function activates the urn's unique Freshness Indicator, which shows how long the coffee has been standing. Six freshness-indicator lights illuminate and turn off one at a time in one-hour increments, and after six hours, when all six lights have gone out, the unit will automatically shut itself off. The coffee urn features a no-drip spigot for easy serving and heat-resistant cool-touch handles for moving the urn without burning fingers. UL rated for commercial or household use, the coffee urn measures 18 by 14 by 11 inches and carries a one-year warranty. --Catie Unger
