Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of De'Longhi CGH800 Contact Grill and Panini Press

Customer Review: DeLonghi Panini Grill - Why we love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

My family loves the panini from this DeLonghi! I never have liked a traditional sandwich: cold cuts of meat between slices of plain bread. As a kid, I much prefered a grilled cheese. A local bistro (Bistro on Main in Tupelo, MS) introduced us to panini, and it is great.

The very first panini we made on this unit turned out great, and subsequent ones got better! This panini maker is big, solid, and well-made. The retro styling is cool, and the retro dial temp control works fine.

Although we haven't used it to grill meat yet, it comes with a drip cup and should work as well as that other "lean, mean grillin' machine."

We are very pleased and highly recommend this unit.

Customer Review: So far so good
Summary: 4 Stars

Bought the DeLonghi for use in our small wine bar to be able to do some hot appetizers with our wine tasting flights. Have used it 5 or 6 times so far and it has been working well.

The only issues are as follows: I was surprised to find that it has no on/off switch - you have to unplug it to turn it off. This could have been a problem if we had needed to plug it in somewhere not easily accessible. Beyond that the only issue I've had is with trying to get the downward pressure to be even on the paninis. The top of the unit does swivel, but I've still had some problem on thicker paninis. If the pressure isn't even, the top slice of bread tends to want to slide forward. Overall...... very pleased so far.

Customer Review: Best of the bunch
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this a few months ago, and by and large it works very well, definitely better than most of the other ones, which I agree are too lightweight to press properly. My only complaint is that I don't think it really gets hot enough to sear the bread, so sometimes, the filling is hot and oozing onto the grill before the bread has really toasted at all. The best way I've found to get around this is to use day-old bread. Very fresh bread tends to get very soggy. Except for that, it works very well, and I use it several times a week. Easy to clean with paper towels. Haven't used it for grilling meats or veggies, again, because I don't think it gets hot enough to properly sear things. Will stick to stovetop for those.

Customer Review: Loving it
Summary: 5 Stars

So far, I've only used it three times (all for sandwiches), but I absolutely love it. I've made a couple of paninis and a reuben. I haven't tried making any other food on it, but I don't see any reason that it won't work for it. I can't wait to try fish on it. My old contact grill had a top which was way too heavy and would just pulverize fish. And it even comes with a nice little recipe book for making paninis. I don't remember seeing it in the description, so that was a pleasant surprise. Oh yeah, cleanup is a breeze.

I enthusiastically recommend this to anyone looking for a good multi-purpose grill (since this is designed to be useful for other grilling needs) at a decent price.

Customer Review: Not a 'press' more like a 'squeeze the life out of'
Summary: 1 Stars

I got this for christmas after asking for the george forman grill with removable plates. This press is AWFUL. The top is SO heavy it "presses" anything you put on it until it's 1/4" thin. If you have cheese in your sandwich it will squeeze the life out of your sandwich until the cheese has melted out all over the unwashable grill plates. The only thing you can do to "wash" this is wipe it down, which is a very timely task considering the grill lines are 1/4" high, so you have to meticulously scrub between each and every one of the lines. This is a huge pain!! Save your money and buy something with washable plates, or at the very least something that won't smoosh your meal into a pancake.
