Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of De'Longhi CGH800 Contact Grill and Panini Press

Customer Review: Great grill; one engineering problem
Summary: 4 Stars

I'm glad I had previously read a customer review explaining it has no on/off switch. Because an insurance adjuster had explained to me a long time ago that repeatedly pulling an electrical cord out of an outlet while the appliance is on ultimately causes house fires to start at that outlet, I went to Radio Shack and purchased a plug-in, dual on/off switch with outlets (about $7.00). The Radio Shack device's on/off switch lights up when the appliance is on, so you know whether you've turned it off. Otherwise, I love the appliance; my husband uses it frequently to make hot sandwiches, and it's easy to clean with a damp paper towel. Melted cheese turns crisp and comes right off the grill with no problems. It's a great product with multiple heat settings, a "ready" light to let you know when it's reached the desired heat, and my only complaint is that the engineer needs to be shot for not putting an on/off switch on the device.

Customer Review: Very good, but plates should be flatter.
Summary: 5 Stars

This unit works well. It gets hot enough to toast your sandwich in about 3 minutes and the pivoted top plate lets you come down square on your food with just a little re-locating of your food. It would be nice if the top plate came down with a parallel arm mechanism, but that is probably too much to expect for $50.

It's biggest problem, and it is not a big one, is that the protrusions in the heating plates are too deep. That means that parts of the bread that cannot get to the valley bottoms (all bread, actually) do not brown. Someone else said this is a silly affection to get the grill marks that some people seem to associate with paninis. I'd prefer that the plates were flat or at least more flat, but this is not a huge deal and this is still a good unit.

One last thing, I wonder what possessed the designers to make the temperature setting knob so smooth that it is hard to grasp.

Customer Review: We dig it.

I bought this for my wife for Mothers Day. Okay, I know what you're thinking: she's my wife, not my mother. I always point this out to her in early May; "You're not my mother," I tell her. She is not amused by this.

But on behalf of the children, I bought her this DeLonghi panini grill, chosen on the basis of the great reviews here at Amazon. We've been making panini a couple times a week, and everybody loves the thing -- especially my wife, who gets to sit back and let everyone make their own dinner for a change.

A side benefit of this product is that each of us gets to refer to his or her individual sandwich as "my panino" -- how much glee we derive from using the singular of this delightful Italian word!

DADDY: "How is your panino?"
SON: "Best panino ever!"

I'm not sure if the "panino" thing works with other brands, but it's rocking with the DeLonghi. Buy it.

Customer Review: Outstanding Panini Grill
Summary: 5 Stars

Was skeptical of all the good reviews on this Panini Grill especially at the price. I have been completely blown away by how well it performs. It heats up very fast and seems to have very even heating across all of the grill surfaces. It will toast up and crust with grill marks a ham & chesse panini sandwhich on whole wheat in a matter of 2-3 minutes. Have used it to cook bacon which it will do in a matter of about 5 minutes to a crispy texture. The heat setting dial is easy to see and use and seems to control the heat very well. Cleaning the unit is accomplished with a warm wet rag very easily. The grill plates do not remove and as such it easier to clean when they are slightly heated. I am very impressed and very please with the inital performance of the grill. The true test of this will be to see how it holds up long term. I am very pleased at this time with this purchase - Great value at this price point.

Customer Review: No a good product like I had hoped for this brand
Summary: 1 Stars

I have had this Grill for over 2 years, barely, I got it as a gift for Christmas. In fact all the siblings got one and I know they were not cheap, however they are made not to last even a few years. I have only used the thing about 15-20 times. My grill's nonstick finish PEELED after using it the other evening. I called the 800 number and of course, it was out of the measly one year warranty. Too bad. The customer service rep tried to tell me that it should still be ok to use, are you kidding me? Definitely an expensive brand and not worth it at all. And its difficult to clean, My next grill will have removable cooking surfaces for easy cleaning and most likely form Costco where the back up their products or on a credit card that offers a longer warranty. DON'T BUY THIS ONE! You can get a better price and hopefully a better non stick finish. DeLonghi CGH800-U Retro Panini Grill
