Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi BCO70 Caffe Nabucco Espresso, Cappuccino, and Coffee Bar

Customer Review: okay coffee, terrible espresso
Summary: 2 Stars

I received this as a gift a year ago and I like the coffee maker part, the coffee comes out with a good flavor albeit a bit cold but it seems all coffee makers these days make the coffee a little cold. Once you mix in milk or 1/2 and 1/2 it is only lukewarm. The removable tank is nice (you can wash it) but awkward to use if you have the unit under a cabinet. Also the unit has a big footprint so that may be of consideration if your counterspace is limited.

I used to have a Delonghi pump-driven espresso machine that worked great. This one has a steam driven espresso that most coffee connoisseurs will advise against. I now know why. The pressure builds inside the water tank as the espresso brews and after 1/2 a shot the machine just shoots out steam. I've tried different grinds and tamping the coffee really hard (you have to buy a tamper with this one) it still builds too much pressure and it shoots out bitter coffee flavored steam after a short while. Also the markings on the pots peel off pretty quick. Not worth the money unless you get it for cheap on ebay.

Customer Review: It delivers on its promises! Awesome machine
Summary: 5 Stars

What a superb machine this is. It delivers on its promises! We admit to being well traveled coffee aficionados, who grind our own coffee, and appreciate a fine machine that creates the coffee one will find in France, Italy, Greece as well as the best food cities here in the states (NYC, New Orleans, Seattle, San Francisco, Miami). And what a versatile and easy to use machine this is and for the price a real gem.

We like the black colour as well as the ease of use. The water container lifts out so easily for filling with easy to read measuring levels in large print. The buttons are elegantly designed and labeled for easy reading even in poor light or when not quit awake in the wee hours of the morning. Which is handy when one has odd hours. The carafe is beautiful and looks classy enough for ones dining table.

The only suggestion I have is buy a second carafe so that one pot can be brewing as the other is being used. This is a machine we will also be giving as a gift. And talk about a machine that makes an awesome Espresso or Cappuccino. WOW !

Customer Review: DeLonghi "Support" Embarassing - Definite "Do Not Buy"
Summary: 1 Stars

Unfortunately, we purchased this product. After a few months, the reservoir started leaking profusely. We followed DeLonghi's instructions to send the coffee maker back to them for service. After three months, we still do not have the replacement unit or a commitment from DeLonghi as to when it will be returned. Our emails inquiring as to the whereabouts of the unit have resulted only in form letters that do not even address our questions.

The last form letter stated that they were "sorry to hear you are still experiencing difficulties" and that "under warranty, if a service center cannot repair a unit in a reasonable amount of time, they can send the unit to Delonghi. If Delonghi cannot repair it, they will replace it." Apparently DeLonghi considers more than three months to be within the range of "reasonable amount of time."

Even the best of companies occasionally produce a lemon, but there is no excuse for "customer service" staff stonewalling the very customers who have put bread on their tables.

Customer Review: Failure and failure to rectify
Summary: 1 Stars

Within 60 days of purchasing the machine, it malfunctioned. As I live in a remote area and the nearest service center is 350 miles away, one way, I did not get the machine to the designated service center until January 2004. They told me they would have the repair completed by the next week. When I did not receive the machine back and did not here from them after 4 weeks I called. They DID NOT CALL ME TO TELL ME WHAT TO DO. At that time they told me I had to send a check for $8.50 (???) to DeLonghi America and they would replace the machine. I did so on January 28, 2004. The check was cashed on February 13, 2004. After calling them twice, I was told that they had to wait 6-8 weeks to send me a new machine. I questioned why it took so long, especially since they cashed the check, and they stated that it was "just their policy." When I asked to speak to a supervisor during both inquiries, that request was denied. So, I still don't have a very expensive machine after 2 months of "service".

Customer Review: Works well for us.
Summary: 4 Stars

We just got one of these to replace a Braun that we had for many years, also to replace a Salton Espresso machine that had broken. First of all, they must have corrected the carafe problem; we have no spilling problems at all. In fact, this one pours a lot better than the Braun did. My wife works for a coffee company and brings home all sorts of coffee blends. We tend to grind our beans at brew time. This coffee maker definitely makes better coffee than our old one did. Could be because the other one was old, but I think it because of temperature and speed. This on takes a little longer to brew a pot full because of the "pulse" action, but the resulting coffee is more flavorful and less bitter. The espresso could be hotter and it does seem to be a little weaker than with our old maker; just use a little more coffee than usual. We do like the little attachment that allows you to brew directly into two cups. Overall, we are satisfied that it was a good buy.
