Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi BCO130T Combination Coffee/Espresso MachineCustomer Review: Worst machine ever-thank goodness it was free Summary: 1 Stars
My husband got this coffee/espresso machine for Christmas three years ago. Our first impression was wow, this thing is intense! Kinda difficult to figure out how to use. I mean-its a frickin coffee machine and it comes with a manual. I don't have time to read a novella about how to make coffee. Once I did though it made sense why the first batch of espresso tasted like tar. Fine. I usually do things the hard way. After that, we had several dozen great cups of coffee/espresso. Unlike some other folks on this site, we had no trouble with the milk. It's not brain surgery folks.
Fast forward late August of the next year (the infamous 8 month mark where this machine seems to self destruct for everyone on this site) and this thing entered its senior citizenship in coffee maker years. And like most folks in their last years on earth, this thing started having incontinence issues. I wasnt aware it was leaking until I noticed a weird smell coming from its general direction and even after I cleaned it it still stunk. It wasn't until I moved it on my quest to discover the source of the stench that I discovered that the smell was coming from mold growing on my now rotten wooden cart. So Gross.
I took the damn thing apart thinking maybe a gasket is loose somewhere (I have a knack for fixing all things mechanical) and sure enough, the gasket on the water reservoir was not as supple as it had been in its youth. I called customer service and the rep was astonishingly rude and uninterested in honoring the warranty since we were not the "original purchaser." This woman had never heard of "Christmas" or "gifts." I guess this is a tradition unique to our family ;)
I was told that I would have to ship the ENTIRE unit far far away to the land of DeLonghi at my expense, but because I dared to take the reservoir out of the machine (I must be Crazy!) I had angered the Gods of Warrant-Y and the warranty was therefore null and void for "tampering" ??? Out of curiosity I asked how much a new reservoir would be...nevermind you don't want to know.
I started putting a "maxi" under the machine for a while, and that seemed to work until the incontinence escalated from a trickle to full on Spring time flooding. I was losing a full cup onto the counter. That's when the coffee started tasting weird. We worked out a formula to deal with the leaking, and it was okay for a while. The espresso side still works fine, btw. The milk foamer thingy tho-too gross to use anymore since as others noted it is really difficult to clean. I would have to bust out my cleaning tool kit that rivaled a dentist's instrument tray for a root canal and all to no avail. Besides: who has time for that?
Not me. RIP milk frother.
It has now been three years and the maxi is no longer sufficient. We use the bottom part of the dish strainer and have moved the thing next to the sink so the water can pour right into the sink. We lose two cups. So, if we want 6 cups of coffee we have to add water to 8 cups, but only enough coffee for 6 cups. Occasionally, it will hold all the water and make a really weak pot. I need coffee in the morning-to live that is,and others need me to have it too or else there will be blood-so this is a bad deal. I will be purchasing a new coffee machine this year as a gift to my husband who has given up and started to give his hard earned money to the evil empire (Dunkin D's) because their terrible brew is actually better than the crap our machine produces. Features that we will not be compromising on: Water retention, user manual with less than one chapter, and a warranty that is not defined in petroglyphs in the cave of the God of Warrant-Y in the far far away land of DeLonghi.
Thank goodness this thing was free (I still might send my warships to battle the natives of DeLonghi for their insolence). Don't Buy this thing. The end.
