Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DeLonghi AS40 Alfredo 6-Slice Convection Toaster OvenCustomer Review: A Solid Little Oven, Worth the Money Summary: 4 Stars
"Toaster-ovens" should really be called something like mini-oven-broilers. If you are incredibly picky about your toast, buy a toaster. This will do a workmanlike job, with a wind-up timer for toast only that is pretty accurate if you start the oven cold, but naturally it dries the bread more. The elements are so far away, it has to rely on circulating air for heat. I find the toaster setting, which uses upper and lower heating elements at once with the fan, to be be perfect for the second part of baking biscotti. In all other departments of oven use, this baby shines. It bakes a 10" pie nicely, or 2 8" loaf pans (first step in the biscotti). The broiler works well, as I test it daily on broiled cheese toast. Often a weak spot for any oven, this one holds well at the lower end, for dehydrating, keeping warm, or delicate baked goods like shortbread and dried meringues that should not brown. The tempered glass door fits snugly. Just don't let go of the ever-cool handle before it's all the way up. The strong spring will give it an alarming snap (no damage, though, so far). The handle is well-designed to support the oven door when it is down, as well. My one complaint: they painted spots over the outer areas of the door, I suppose so it will look more like a teeny-windowed microwave, instead of letting us have a shadow-free view to check browning more easily. The clever handle for pulling out hot racks and pans is such a stroke of genius! The included cookie sheets set down into the rack so that they don't slide, making it easier to pull the rack with the sheet when taking out done cookies. I find the sheet easily holds a dozen drop sugar cookies. If you live in a hot climate with no air-conditioning, the thermal insulation may seem a bit light as it warms up the kitchen, but frankly most of that is coming through the door. I put the spare rack on top of the oven to keep its little pans and handle handy, but with space between them and the actual oven top, and they are never hot, even after a lot of baking. If you want an oven for a small apartment kitchen, a dorm room, or other tight area that will cook as well as a large one -- just not as much at a time -- I would recommend this one fearlessly. It's also good as a craft oven for polyclays, and you can buy a dehydrating kit for it, if you want to dry foods but keep your main oven free. The actual interior dimensions are 10" deep by 11" wide by 4" between the lowest rack and the broiler elements. Consider this if you are addicted to tall dishes or could not live without the things you bake in your 11" diameter pottery baking dish. I'm entirely glad I took a chance on this one. I hope you will be, too.
