The mortar and the ball of the pestle are made of heavy stainless steel. The handle of the pestle is made of sturdy stainless steel, though of a lighter gauge than the rest. Overall, both mortar and pestle are well-built and sturdy, and work well. Some people might want a larger bowl (holds about 8oz to the brim), but I use it for no more than 1 Tbs at a time, so it is the perfect size for my needs.
