Customer Review: My cats really like it, but it could use some improvement

Let me start off with the good points.

I can say that my cats love this toy. It's one of the few wand toys they'll play with on their own instead of just when I'm waving it around for them. I have it set up so that the mouse hangs over the side of a box and dangles just off the ground, and they'll bat it when they walk by. They also try to carry it away and hide it regularly. I also like the fact that the lead is difficult for them to chew through.

Now for the not so good points.

Durability is the biggest minus. My cats swiftly pulled the tail and ears off the mouse, and while I found the tail and threw it away, the ears went missing permanently, and for awhile I was worried that they ate them. Also, the lower red cap piece pulled off, leaving the sharp end of the sparkly wire pipe cleaner poking out of the bottom. IMHO, the rod is not long enough either. It's a lot smaller than it looks in the picture, with the rod maybe being 12". Not long enough to get good leverage for swinging the mouse about. The swivel that attaches the mouse to the wire is a cheap barrel swivel that tends to get caught on carpeting if you twirl the mouse around too much.

Really, all this toy is is a deer hair mouse imitation fly tied to a fishhook that's been amputated just in front of the bend, attached with a to a wire leader and a rod that's too short. With a couple of bucks you could make something a lot better yourself. If you like fishing, you probably have most of the material that goes into this thing lying around. Buy a hair mouse fly from the local flyfishing shop, clip off the hook part with a pair of wire cutters, get a 36" wire leader or some heavy monofilament and a nice crane style snap swivel and tie the other end onto the end of a 24" dowel rod with a notch cut in it. You'll end up with basically the same thing for a lot less.
