Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DELONGHI 12cup COFFEEMAKR PRGRMBL. GLASS CARAFE

Customer Review: Horrible!
Summary: 1 Stars

We've had this for over a week and it's got to be the worst coffee maker ever.

The carafe on our old 12 cup Braun broke and we needed an emergency replacement. We ended up purchasing this at Target on an impulse buy after failed attempts to find a decent replacement at other stores. Lesson learned is to NEVER buy without researching!

The coffee maker is slow, especially when you use the Aroma setting. We made our first pot without this setting and the coffee was very weak and left an after taste. With Aroma setting it takes about 25 - 30 minutes to brew. This would be fine if it made decent coffee, however this is not the case and the flavor is very inconsistent.

My biggest gripe is the coffee temperature. The first cup is always luke warm, which I can't stand. I like my coffee hot, so I don't have to down it before it gets cold. The second cup is warmer as it's been heated with the warming plate. However it doesn't taste quite right and reminds me of old coffee at a diner. Equally irritating is the poorly designed carafe which always spills.

Minor gripes... You're not alerted when it's done brewing... You can't adjust the auto shut off... The coffee basket design is awkward and will not stand up on it's own while filling the coffee.... It takes up a lot of counter space...

So if you're looking for a coffee maker that is slow and brews weak, luke warm coffee, then this is the one for you, otherwise, do yourself a huge favor and avoid this at all costs...

BTW, I just ordered a new Braun and eagerly await it's arrival...

Customer Review: What happened to the 12 cups?
Summary: 3 Stars

In general, this product produces a decent cup of coffee - so in that sense it meets our primary criteria. However, there are a few things about it that we find disturbing: chief of which is that it is advertised as a 12 cup coffeemaker, well guess what, it never brews more than 10 cups no matter how much coffee and water we put in. There are other things about it that people contemplating a purchase should be aware of:
# It has a very slow brew cycle, and if you select the 'Aroma' setting
which is supposed to enhance taste and coffee aroma, it will double
up the already slow cycle.
# The carafe design featuring the attached cover is difficult to pour
with due to the heat of the freshly brewed coffee, and the narrow
design of the lip (not sure if that is the right word) which leads
many spills. It is not well designed.
# The coffeemakers large footprint makes it awkward to put in the
water, particularly if your counterspace is at a premium. I end up
having to turn it sideways to do so.

All in all, I would think that this machine does not deserve the rating it had at the time of our purchase.

Customer Review: pretty but dangerous

gorgeous on the counter. brews decently. HOWEVER-- the stainless bucket you see is softsided and does not close properly unless you use two hands and bend and wiggle it in--or out to clean it. you think it's hooked and where's the coffee??? stuck up in the bucket! so if you open it curiously to see, you could burn yourself badly. if you manage to close it carefully, then the coffee will drip. i believe this is the basis of the "aroma" function--the water sits on the ground longer before coming down into the pot??? the clock never keeps time so therefore the timer is useless. you burn yourself while pouring the coffee for the lid and the handle leave a funny space for steam to escape. other than that, it's pretty. hit the on button once and it engages a TIMER. hit it twice and it's actually on. This is just annoying. Especially if you just slip and hit it once, come back wondering where the coffee is and realize you set the non-funcioning timer because the clock doesn't function. So don't be fooled by the fancy and just buy a different brand.

Customer Review: Just bought the second one. Great coffee maker!
Summary: 5 Stars

Bought this model at Target a few years back and was VERY pleasantly surprised at how delicious the coffee was. I like that there is a clear window with measurements to show how much water is in the tank. Like the small basket, for better soaking of the coffee. I always use the slower, aroma setting. It does not take THAT much longer and is definitely worth the wait. The basket mechanism is a bit difficult to open sometimes, and the carafe handle can get in the way of things until you get used to how it works. At least three very serious coffee drinking friends have commented favorably after being served coffee from this model. I was surprised that so many people had complaints. My coffee is always hot, not too hot, always strong enough. All I can guess is that there may be some inconsistency between individual coffee makers in this model. Yet the two I purchased work great. I use Starbuck's Italian roast and it tastes wonderful.

Customer Review: Awesome Coffeemaker
Summary: 5 Stars

Once upon a time I had a hand-me-down, ancient Mr. Coffee coffeemaker. It made the best coffee ever, and I thought it was because *I* made the best coffee ever. That coffeemaker died after a combined 20+ years of service in my mother's house, and my first few apartments. I went through a series of replacements, none of which survived more than a year and all of which made HORRID coffee. I got this one for Christmas two years ago. 700 pots of coffee later I can honestly say this coffeemaker is BETTER than the Mr. Coffee it replaced. The single greatest feature is the "aroma" button, which lengthens the brew cycle, making richer, more flavorful coffee. It has just the right balance of bells and whistles and simplicity. I've experienced none of the problems other reviewers listed and chalk them up to user error rather than design flaws. I love this coffeemaker.
