Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup 12-Ounce Porcelain Travel Cup with LidCustomer Review: A cup AND a conversation piece Summary: 4 Stars
This product really does look like an actual paper cup, to the point of startling people with its un-paperlike sound when you set it down. For these reasons, it's an excellent conversation piece, or starter, or ice breaker at the office.
The cup itself is approximately the same size as a so-called "Grande" paper cup at Starbucks (or "Medium" anywhere else). At 10 ounces, however, it holds far less coffee -- less even that that in a Starbucks "Tall" (or "Small"). The reason for this is the large amount of insulation in the cup.
Other than that, the cup does its job. The one complaint I have is that the rubber lid gets easily stained; make sure to wash it frequently and completely.
One last note: for some reason Amazon rates this product as a "toy," and therefore asks reviewers to rate its durability, "fun-ness," and educational value. Hence my attempts at reviewing for such aspects.
Customer Review: Great design but the silicon smells funny Summary: 3 Stars
I love the design of the cup. However, the big minus is that the silicon lid smells strongly: when my nose gets near to it when drinking, it's quite unpleasant and interferes with tasting the coffee. Without the lid, it's fine, of course.
NB: I've only used this for one day. I don't know if the smell from the lid will wear off.
Other notes:
* there is a small air hole in the lid, now. Maybe this is a new feature.
* I have not experienced any leaks, even when taking a brisk walk across campus with the cup full of coffee.
* Insulation is pretty good, but would be better if you heated the cup with hot water before filling it. My coffee cooled a lot quicker than expected when I filled it while the mug was at room temperature.
UPDATE: After several months, the smell from the lid has worn off. In light of this, I would rate this 4 stars instead.
Customer Review: SUPER!!! Summary: 5 Stars
this is fantastic!!! I love it. People who say the lid leaks are [...] and probably do not have the wherewithal to make sure it was properly snapped down ... and the silicone lid smells like silicone for like a hot minute ... wash it, use it and get over it - think of it like that new car smell. And yes my lid does have a tiny VERY tiny air hole ... look again other reviewer : ) maybe yours is special. Here are my ONLY complains:
1. doesn't hold enough - only about a standard coffee cup size not like a venti or grande amount
2. the silicone does a fantastic job of concealing the scalding temperatures of your beverage ... even cautious sipping can be dangerous and may possibly lead to cursing #hotdamn #ohfcuk #gezus but then again I live in NYC and everything eventually results in swearing ... it's charming - most people love me for it. Enjoy your I'm not a paper cup!!!
Customer Review: Almost great! Summary: 4 Stars
I love this cup with a few caveats.... First, let me say it keeps my drink warm and from spilling, and it looks good and is easy to clean. I really like it. Here are the caveats:
1) The surface for me, for some reason, is like fingers on a chalk board. Therefore, I keep a cardboard sleeve on there (the kind you get with a real paper cup) and hold it by that.
2) The inside of the lid get stained by the coffee, but that's really not a big deal as no one else sees that.
3) There is a little crack on the inside near the top. It still works, but because the surface is not smooth, the coffee stains that and I can never clean it so it's white like the rest of the cup. I'm sure they would replace it for me, but I never got around to contacting them...
That's all. Despite those three points, I still use it all the time and I love it!
Customer Review: They've fixed the problems... Summary: 5 Stars
Others have written about the lack of a "valve" hole in the top and a problem with the top staining. My cup has a hole, and so far, after a month of frequent use, there is no indication of staining at all. Now, I drink latte more often than coffee, so that may be why, but overall, I'm extremely pleased with this cup. I use it at home without the top, just because I like the feel of the mug portion.
I've also seen comments from people worried about burning their hands, but thanks to the double-walled construction, the cup barely gets warm.
Finally, despite being the size of a "grande" (16oz) cup, the capacity is only as much as a "tall" (12oz). I've taken advantage of that disparity to reduce my intake... or, when the mood strikes, I have two cups and get a little more boost.
Overall, a great product, well-designed and well-made.
