Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup 12-Ounce Porcelain Travel Cup with Lid

Customer Review: Delightful in so many ways
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a welcome witty surprise. It continues to delight me that it is NOT a paper cup. The real pleasure of drinking from porcelain is hard to describe and to have a porcelain travel mug is a real treat.

Size: It is smaller than some travel mugs and you will have to decide for yourself how important that is to you. I drink tea and it's a very good size holding at least as much as the [[ASIN:B000WG6Q5U Bodum New Yo-yo Set Glass with S/s Tea Strainer Double Wall]. (It works well with the same infuser.)

Top: The silicone odor goes away more quickly if you wash it with a mild dishwashing soap (rinse well!). As mentioned in another review mine does not have a vent hole and dispenses a very pleasant mouthful with each sip. Mine seals perfectly with no issues.

Finish: I really love the matte, sandblasted, finish on the outside. It feels great. It does pick up a little soil over time but releases it quickly when washed with a sponge and dishwashing liquid or Bon Ami. The inside is high gloss and cleans up easily. The lip is well shaped and really pleasant from which to drink.

I agree that it retains heat better if you preheat it by pouring hot water in for a minute or so before filling it with your beverage of choice. Even pre-heated the double wall insulates very well and, with the top on, keeps your beverage hot for quite reasonable period of time.

All in all I find it a well executed, witty, functional piece of Eco-friendly design.

Customer Review: I love my I am Not A Paper Cup!
Summary: 5 Stars

I LOVE this cup!

I refuse to drink out of styro. I was tired of plasticy-type travel mugs that imparted plastic flavors, and coffee odors, into each other. The stainless cups pulled heat from coffee too quickly and--well, you get my picture. Since I drink out of a ceramic or porcelain mug everyday anyway, this has become a favorite cup!

I don't mind the small capacity. The lid fits great and very snuggly--I can't imagine it not fitting or why some reviewers reported leaks? The instructions say to wash the lid with vinegar or toothpaste I think, but silicone has always withstood my dishwasher. So has the cup. However, I find myself handwashing it most often b/c I want it available right away!

Easy to drink from. Like my other cups, I preheat it with water in the micro for 1 minute before filling it. Then my coffee stays really hot. The cup itself seems to do a fine job retaining heat, but I like my coffee really hot. Of course, you can use this cup for tea, cocoa, or even cold bevvys I guess.

Enjoy! I might want a sleeve as adverised (pink) for this. I don't mind the "unglazed" feel so much of the outside of the cup (inside is slick and "glazed" feel), but it's a little offputting, almost like a chalkboard "feel". I can deal with it for now. The sleeve is only $4.

Not worried about breakage--I've never dropped a coffee cup at home and this isn't hard to hold in the slightest!

Customer Review: It's Embarrassing How Much I Love This Cup
Summary: 5 Stars

My brother gave me this cup for Christmas. I love my brother....

This cup is really stylish, feels good in your hand, and is a great conversation starter. Best of all, it doesn't distort the flavor of your coffee like all the nasty metal cups I've tried. Also holds heat very well.

I have had some discoloration of the lid over a period of months, but it doesn't worry me and I'm sure if I tried a little harder to whiten it back up I could.

I'm going to order another one just in case I drop mine on my tile flooring, though the slightly rough exterior of the cup is very "grippy" and I don't feel like I'm in imminent danger of that.

Buy it! You won't be sorry. It's a great gift idea too, not expensive and very unique.

UPDATE January 2011:

I just came to this site to order another one of these cups as a backup since I gave my previous backup to a friend at Christmas and I was shocked at how many negative reviews are out there on this product with most of the complaints being about leaks. I have owned my "not a paper cup" for 2 years now, since Christmas 2008 and I have never once had a single leak! It's one of the best features about it -- doesn't leak on my cloths, stays hot, has a grippy surface. In order words, it's still fantastic. After two years of use, the one thing not perfect is some discoloration of the lid which I'm still too lazy to try to fix.

Customer Review: Really great with a couple small anoyances
Summary: 4 Stars

The good:
It really doesn't have e leaking problem. Mine leaked once when I filled it all the way to the top. You can kind of see where you should stop- where it gets broader at the top to accommodate the lid. I tempted fate and it won. Tea slid down the outside and, to my surprise and delight, did not stain the exterior.

Delighted that the silicon doesn't smell funny when I lift the cup to sip.

It fits in my car's cup holder and I have an old European car which is not suited for super big gulps and the like.

The bad:
it only holds like 10 ounces. When I drink tea I want like 40 ounces of tea, but this is probably better for me though. If you're a coffee drinker, this should be plenty because you really do not need more than 10 ounces of coffee, let's be honest.

The texture of the outside makes my skin crawl. It's weird not quite sand papery, but definitely not smooth. And I *hate* it. But, I snatched a paper handle thingy from a coffee bar- the wrap they give you instead of giving you something thermal or a second cup- and put that one mine and now I don't have to feel the yucky texture.

It's heavy. I mean, it's not like I can't lift the thing, but when you're used to a paper cup when you see that white cup, your hand is very surprised by the weight.

Customer Review: The Coziest Cup I've Ever Had
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this cup at one of our local bookstores - a place that combines two of my favorite things: reading and coffee. Even if I don't necessarily buy coffee, I still like the smell, or just the fact that I'm in an atmosphere of coffee.

I don't normally drink hot coffee. In the heat that we normally have, I usually drink cold tea or lemonade. But this winter has been exceptionally colder than usual, and I drank more hot coffee this winter than I normally do. When I saw that cup in the bookstore, I knew it was exactly what I needed. I had a coffee cup, but none that fit in the cup holder of my car, plus this one has a lid.

This wonderful thermal cup will accomodate hot liquids, cold liquids, and room-temperature liquids. So even after this unbearably cold winter is over, I will still use it for cold drinks.

This cup is dishwasher-safe, even the lid. The lid does not shrivel up aftr having gone through the dishwasher.

This cup is also good for the environment, because it looks like a paper cup, and has the shape of a paper cup, and has a lid. But it is not paper. You can keep using it without making trash.

I love my new cup. It is cozy and warm. It is a cool winner indeed!
