Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup 12-Ounce Porcelain Travel Cup with Lid

Customer Review: WHY Must they make Soap-Bars SLIPPERY?
Summary: 4 Stars

This "I AM NOT a Paper Cup" Ceramic Cup is the most satisfying travel cup I've ever owned - and I've owned a few. It is simply a MARVEL, and such FUN! Delightfully functional, it is yet such a realistic, dead-on facsimile of an actual paper cup that it makes for a superb visual pun. Its glazed inside surface conveys no taste but my coffee, even as its matte, subtly textured outside surface conveys a perfect trompe l'oeil paper cup... Folks around are constantly doing double-takes.

[True story: I once left mine alone briefly on a cafe-table with some newspapers, only to find upon my return that a lady was sitting comfortably there, with all my stuff gone. Asked if she had seen my ceramic cup on the table when she came, the lady swore there had been nothing but trash, which she had discarded - some used papers and MAYBE a soiled paper cup, but NO WAY anything else! So rummaging through the nearby trash-can, I find - of course - my awesome, unharmed, ceramic cup.]

So, since this cup is so great, why do I rate it only 4-Stars? Well, I'm reminded of Andy Rooney's complaint on Sixty-Minutes, once, that the makers of BATH-SOAP were in a grand conspiracy to force everyone to buy more of their product... How? They kept making their soap-bars SLIPPERY, so we all must keep dropping 'em in the bath tub and thereby wasting 'em, and so we keep on having to buy ever MORE! -- My problem with this cup is similar: they make it CERAMIC, so it's FRAGILE -- one careless bounce and it's cracked or shattered! I've broken TWO of 'em now, but my "I Am Not a Paper Cup" ceramic cup has become so indispensable that I am here on Amazon now to buy yet another replacement, which will be my THIRD such Cup...

Now, I do NOT want my "I Am Not a Paper Cup" ceramic cup to be made of nor embellished with plastic, white-glazed metal, silicone rubber, nor any other material! Only a CERAMIC will do for this excellent cup (That's Not a Paper Cup)... It's just too bad that the darn thing tends to shatter! So, I LOVE it, but until they can bring it out in unbreakable ceramic, from me it's FOUR STARS only. Still, get yourself one...

Customer Review: best choice if flavor is your top priority
Summary: 5 Stars

I love, love, love my "I am not a paper cup"! I can't stand the taste of beverages from stainless steel, and while plastic doesn't taste that great either, I'm more concerned about the chemicals it leaches. This ceramic travel mug is almost perfect! It really does look, and pretty much feels, like a disposable paper coffee cup. The outer wall is a matte finish, while the inner lining of the cup is smooth and glossy. The silicone lid has a tiny pinhole, so their are no issues with airflow, but most importantly, it fits on very easily and DOES NOT LEAK. In fact, I love that I can pick it up out of my car cup holder by the lid (by placing pressure on the lid where it attaches to the cup itself). I've never been able to do that with the stainless steel ones - I always ended up pulling the lid off. The coffee doesn't stay hot quite as long as the stainless steel mugs, however it doesn't hold quite as much coffee, so you'll probably be finished the beverage before it gets cold. I don't mind that it holds a little less than what I'm used to, as I never could finish before it got too cold, and I know it's not good to drink too much coffee anyway. The mug and lid clean up nicely in the top rack of the dishwasher - who can say that about most other travel mugs???
This is DEFINITELY one of my favorite purchases ever. I couldn't be happier.

UPDATE****after using these mugs for months, I have a few comments

1. If you are concerned about keeping your coffee hot for longer than a regular mug at home does, this won't do the trick. HOWEVER, if you are most concerned about the flavor, this is the mug for you. In this mug you get the true coffee taste (not like steel or plastic).

2. for those complaining of leaks, I found this cup is similar to a baby bottle in that it needs to be completely dry and properly assembled. The lid should have no moisture in the edge that surrounds the lip of the cup, and the top of the cup must be clean and dry. If you don't follow these guidelines, you are likely to have leaks.

I still highly recommend this mug for people who appreciate coffee

Customer Review: Cool idea, just wouldn't take to Starbucks
Summary: 4 Stars

First off, let me say, I do love this cup! It has substance -- heavy, if you're expecting to pick up a paper cup -- and the outside is slightly textured, making it easy to hold even with wet hands. The inside is smooth and rounded porcelain, without any corners, making it easy to wash. Even when filled with boiling hot liquid, it only gets very warm to the touch, and you can easily hold it without a cupholder. I've noticed, though, despite the insulation, that it doesn't seem to keep liquids hot for any significant length of time. The silicone lid does have an unpleasant odor right out of the package, but it fades soon enough, and I haven't had any trouble with leakage in the two months I've had it -- although the white lids seem to stain easily, requiring some scrubbing. It also (bleh) collects lint a little more easily than I'd like.

The only problem I have with it, is that I'd been looking for an environmentally-friendly paper-cup 'replacement' to take with me to the local coffee shops, and after seeing this in a store, thought I'd give it a try. Like previous reviewers have pointed out, however, when I opened the package at home, I found that it slopes into a curved 'cone' inside, making it much larger on the outside than it is on the inside -- and 10 liquid ounces isn't that much. To be clear, that's less than even the 'Tall' cups at Starbucks will hold. (As an aside, I'd also be cautious handing over a breakable cup costing nearly $18 to the baristas to fill -- it's sturdy, but drop it and will still break.)

Because of this, I use the cup constantly at my desk at work (it's perfect for tea), but still find myself bringing home paper cups from Starbucks -- because doggone it, if I am paying Starbucks prices, I want those last two ounces of coffee! If DCI could find a way to make a cup with more space inside (perhaps using less insulation, and selling a silicone cupholder with the cup?) ...I'd be quick to buy it. As it is, it's a great cup for what it is, as long as you keep in mind that its exterior size can be a little misleading.

Customer Review: I love this cup
Summary: 5 Stars

I had several concerns when I was looking for a coffee cup and this cup is perfect for me. First I have arthritis and Raynauds syndrome so my hands are often uncooperative and are very sensitive to hot and cold. I have trouble holding on to a regular coffee cup by handle when my arthritis is acting up and I can't hold it by the outside of the cup because it is too hot for my hands. I wanted a cup that I could hold without feeling like it was going to burn through my hands and this cup works just as described. The air chamber keeps the coffee hot and the outside of the cup cool. My hands are also very clumsy at times which is why I wanted a secure lid. This lid fits like a glove and while it is not spill proof, there is no fear of the lid coming off if the cup is dropped. It is porcelain so I can't risk dropping it on my tile floors, but I have dropped it on my carpet and the lid stayed in place. The amount that spilled was only a drop or two which was wonderful considering it landed on its lid when I dropped it. The porcelain keeps it from retaining any flavor so I do not have to worry about my coffee tasting like tea or vica versa. The lid and the cup are easy to wash, but the lid does get stained after awhile. The outside of the cup is barely textured so that it is not really noticeable, but not slippery either. I also have a Keurig coffee brewer and the cup size is perfect for the 8 or 10 ounce size settings depending on whether or not you want to leave room for cream and/or sugar. I am considering purchasing a sleeve for it because I think it might help my clumsy hands hold on to it a bit better, but I am not sure if it would really make a big difference since the cup is somewhat textured. I like that I have that as an option though. I have even seen sleeves available for it that include a handle. That would not work for me, but for those of you who want an eco friendly option without having to sacrifice the handle, it is an option. Like the title of this review says, I love this cup!

Customer Review: There is Leakage
Summary: 2 Stars

I was very excited to get this product for the same reasons you may be too...
Microwaveable, Fits in Car Cup Holders, Clever Design, Enviromentaly Friendly...

There are absolutely disadvantages...
1) This isn't your typical Grande, and holds a lot less beverage that one would initially assume. It stands to reason once you consider the fact that its is insulated... but I am still suprised/disappointed when the last sip comes too soon.

2) Severe Leakage! You must have to have special powers to prevent this cup from leaking. I certainly haven't been able to simply slap the lid on and go. This cup requires special time and consideration to seal properly. It is just like when the barista lines up the mouth hole of your paper cup lid with the seam of the cup, and you get the trickle of coffee quietly escaping down the side... except with this cup there is not only 1 place on the cup that leaks... it could be anywhere! I've checked the lip of the cup for bubbles or nicks, but I think it just doesn't have a good seal. If you can get the lid to suction on just right while the edges are dry, then you might have success. But forget about re-fills... once the "seal is broken"...

3) Holy overpriced! I shopped for this product before I purchased it and didn't find a very good price, but decided to go with it since there were so many good reviews... and because it was a gift for my husband who really wanted one. He refuses to use it now. I use it occasionaly still but spend too much time worrying about leaks. I feel a little duped that I spent too much on a product that really isn't the reliable or as great as it appeared on the page. I think $7 for a leaky cup would even be overpriced... no matter how good the design... but if I had paid that much, I probably wouldn't have bothered to write a negative review.

Maybe we'll see more, better, affordable options that have some similar qualities as this product and fewer disappointments.
