Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup 12-Ounce Porcelain Travel Cup with LidCustomer Review: My Cup Runneth Over! Summary: 5 Stars
Well, not literally. But I am happy with my purchase.
I wanted a coffee & tea cup that was different from the run-of-the-mill silver or plastic travel mugs I see all the time. I debated between this one and the Copco To-Go Mug (Copco 2510-9963 Acadia Reusable To-Go Mug, 16-Ounce Capacity). The Copco version is made of BPA-free plastic and is much lighter and durable (and cheaper at about $5.99). But when I saw it in person at the store I didn't like the brown plastic drink sleeve and the overall look. It was less, well...fun. Though the design of the Copco is made to look like a disposable cup, just like DCI's, the plastic made it look cheap and less interesting. The construction also appeared cheap, like any part of it would crack easily. DCI's I Am Not A Plastic Cup looks like an actual art piece and the construction seems much more solid.
IMPRESSIONS:
-The cup is heavier than expected (definitely heavier than your average mug). Therefore it's not an ideal cup for holding for an extensive period of time.
-The outside of the cup is rough, reminiscent of sandpaper (but not as gritty), while the inside is smooth ceramic (like the inside of your standard mugs).
-There's a tiny hole in the lid.
PROS:
-The lid thus far seems very secure. I will update this review if the lid becomes looser as I use the cup more. I put it in the cup holder in my car and am not at all worried about spilling (unless the cup falls out of the holder).
-I put boiling water into the cup and I can barely feel the heat with my hand.
-Though the lid does stain easily, it's no fuss to clean. One simple wash makes it look new again. If you need a replacement lid, Amazon sells them here: DCI I Am Not a Plastic Lid, Set of 2
-Pleasant design. It sure does look like a paper cup and, as many have noted, it's a great conversation-starter. I like how it doesn't have any logos or frills.
CONS:
-When you first use it, you will get a rubbery taste from the lid. I tried washing it three times when I first got it, but I still got a small whiff of it. After several uses, though, it does disappear and all you taste is your beverage.
-It doesn't bounce. ;) Of course, it's not as durable as other cup options. One slip of your hand and it's a goner! It's not the kind of cup you want to throw into your backpack or work bag.
-The weight. I do wish it were a bit lighter, but it's not a deal breaker.
I'm very happy with my purchase and will probably purchase another.
Description of DCI I Am Not a Paper Cup 12-Ounce Porcelain Travel Cup with LidTurn your everyday disposable cup into a reusable mug. DCI?s double-walled, thermal porcelain cup is ideal for commuting, sporting events, and the office. The flexible silicone lid helps keep beverages hot or cold for longer and helps prevent messy spills. The two layers of porcelain, which are separated by a hollow cavity, act as a perfect insulator for hot and cold beverages and ensure that you won?t burn your fingers. A silicone stopper in the cup?s base prevents water from entering the hollow cavity when washing the mug. This porcelain cup is both microwave- and dishwasher-safe, holds approximately 10 ounces, and measures 3-1/2 by six inches.
