Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese MakerCustomer Review: Handy Dandy Yogurt Cheese/Greek Yogurt Maker Summary: 4 Stars
Having fooled with making yogurt cheese with cheesecloth and a strainer over a bowl, I was glad someone made a neater, tidier, easier to use product.
I use the Donvier Yogurt maker to make my yogurt using organic milk and Oikos greek yogurt for starter. Put a few of the cups into the Yogurt Cheese Maker to thicken it up even further for greek-style yogurt or leave longer to make yogurt cheese.
I use the thickened yogurt in Waldorf Salds, Chicken Salads and as a base for a creamy avocado salad dressing. There are myriad ways to use the thickened yogurt...be creative!
I gave this four stars instead of five because the container needs to be deeper to hold the liquid away from the thickened yogurt. Very simple to fix flaw in otherwise great product.
Customer Review: Smells & tastes awful!! Summary: 2 Stars
When I took this item out of the box it had a very strong odor. The instructions for cleaning only stated to clean with soap just before each use. I washed it with warm soapy water and it still smelled. I allowed it to soak in hot soapy water for an hour or so. The smell was pretty much gone, so I decided to go ahead and try it out. I allowed it to strain for nearly 24 hours. When I dumped the cheese out, what was closest to the mesh had a grey color and the cheese had a metalic smell. I scraped off the grey layer and tasted it and it had a metalic taste. I am going to run the cheese maker through the dishwasher and try it one more time. If I get the metalic taste/smell again, I am returning it and I'll just use cheesecloth to make it. I am very disappointed!
Customer Review: I do NOT recommend this product. Summary: 1 Stars
I have been straining yogurt in a plastic bowl with cheese cloth with great results for a long time. I thought this might be an easier way to do it, but I was wrong. The yogurt basket sits too low in this container, allowing the yogurt to "sit" in the whey. Also, I like to make very firm yogurt cheese and so I leave my yogurt in the cheese cloth up to 3 days. This did not work well in the Cuisipro Donvier. Having the yogurt in contact with the metal screen for that length of time caused the yogurt to become discolored and actually smell very "off". I threw away the entire batch of yogurt and whey.
I will never use this to separate yogurt again, unless I simply remove the screen insert and use cheese cloth instead.
Customer Review: Works wonderfully! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm lactose intolerant, but seem to be able to tolerate homemade yogurt just fine. What a nice treat to create a delicious (and for me, totally digestible) spreadable "cheese"! Sometimes I add herbs, or stir in a little all-fruit-jam, and make something amazingly delicious and low fat to spread on my toast and bagels. I wish I had discovered this years ago. The only thing I'm more excited about is my homemade Salton yogurt maker, which I also bought here on Amazon.com.... I make homemade yogurt almost every other day now. Easy, no preservatives, lots of healthy live cultures...Salton YM9 1-Quart Yogurt Maker
Customer Review: I Like It - But ... Summary: 4 Stars
I usually make yocheese with a small amount of yogurt, maybe a cup or so, and have been using a Melita coffee filter with a paper filter, covered with plastic wrap, placed over a small jar - which I later use for storage of the cheese. This works very well for small amounts. I put the same amount in my brand new Cuisipro Donvier cheese maker and left it over night in the fridge. It wasn't as thick as it is with the coffee filter as not as much liquid (whey) drained out of it, after about the same amount of time. I think I will stick with the coffee filter for small amounts and use this for larger batches. It was very easy to clean and doesn't take up much space in my already over crowded fridge.
