Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisipro Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker

Customer Review: Great snack and appetizer maker!
Summary: 5 Stars

I love yogurt, and now that I have this lebna maker I can have the perfect yogurt treat anytime. My friends and family have grown to love the cheese too, so I like to serve it as an appetizer when they come over. It can hold a whole large container of yogurt at once (Danon has worked best so far).

I have tried using all types of yogurt with this product, including organic and European style - which are too "runny" in some cases (they can't hold up to the strainer too well). I also make my own yogurt occasionally which is "hit and miss". Danon is more readily available, but the Middle Eastern yogurt (found at international grocery stores) produces the perfect tart cheese (the way I like it).

Either way, try stirring in a little ground sea salt before you pour the yogurt into the cheese maker. When it's reduced by about half from draining, scoop out and top with plenty of cracked pepper, drizzle with olive oil, and serve with Middle Eastern style flat bread (toasted crisp)! Yummy!

Customer Review: Terrific device
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two of these rascals and purchased a number of them for my children. It works just dandy. I've had them for approximately 18 to 20 months and have them in use all the time. There is the drawback that they don't hold a full quart, but, I've found that if I put the yogurt in the basket without putting the lid on it, I can put it in the fridge for about 30 minutes when enough liquid will drain off for the lid to fit on. I dump the liquid in a few hours and then let it sit for a day or two. Enough liquid drains off in the first few hours to allow the yogurt not to sit in it if you discard it at that time. I've used yogurt that I've made myself and yogurt that I've purchased in the container. I use or make non-fat yogurt with no problem. It's great for making tzatziki and other different spreads and dips. Although, it may seem a bit pricey (which it is) the long term utility makes up for it. Cheese cloth is messy and must be continually replaced. I have had no trace of rust nor odors from the container.

Customer Review: Fantastic Gadget!
Summary: 5 Stars

I like to make homemade yogurt but it always turns out too runny for my taste. I've been straining the yogurt myself but it's always messy and takes a bowl, strainer, paper towels -- not to mention another container with lid to store the yogurt cheese after it's done. The Donvier Yogurt Cheese Maker is so easy! Just plop your yogurt into the strainer and close the lid. Super simple -- and no mess.

Clean-up is simple. I just pop the strainer portion in the top rack of the dishwasher and give the container a quick swipe with a soapy sponge.

I love the nice cream-cheese consistency of yogurt cheese and now that it is so convenient to make I am using it a lot more often. Yogurt cheese is great mixed with fruit and honey, with salsa as a sour cream substitute to enjoy with tortilla chips or, my new favorite, mixed with a little salt, pepper, and lots of onion powder for a healthy version of french onion dip.

I highly recommend this yogurt cheese maker.

Customer Review: Had to throw away the yogurt cheese
Summary: 1 Stars

I placed three cups of homemade whole milk yogurt in the cleaned (hot water and dish soap, allowed to air dry) strainer. A few hours later I poured out the whey. Some yogurt had also been strained into the whey so I carefully placed that into the strainer. After 8 hours in the fridge I checked the yogurt cheese. It was quite firm BUT AWFUL!!!!!!! The metal screen had imparted a garlic-metallic yucky taste to the cheese and the plastic had started to give off a very bad chemical smell that the cheese absorbed. Needless to say, the cheese tasted TERRIBLE! There was no way to salvage it. I had to spit out the cheese -it was that bad! I washed the whole kit and re-packaged it and requested a refund from Amazon. I must have received a defective in materials item. There's no way I will re-order this ever. I guess I'll try coffee filters in mesh-screen colander. Maybe I'll just have to look for the Yogourmet cheese maker. Don't waste your time, money, or yogurt on this poorly made device.

Customer Review: If you can use a spoon - you can make yogurt cheese...
Summary: 5 Stars

So, I stole it from the Yo-cheese folks - I bought their cookbook!

This is the simplest and best device for making yogurt cheese. It makes yogurt "cream" in 2 hours, and yogurt cheese stiff enough to make a cheesecake overnight.

A few details. If you fill the device full of yogurt, you need to dump the whey after about 1/2 hour as it gets full. After you have drained the yogurt, empty it by up-ending it into a bowl with a larger mouth than the device, otherwise you waste some of the cheese scraping it out with a spoon.

I use the yogurt cheese to extend mayonaise and sour cream. I've made a lovely low-fat cheesecake with it, mixing it it 2/1 ratio with neufchatel cheese. I have used it in white sauces, and it makes them creamy and yummy!

We bought this to incorporate yogurt cheese into our diet to got lower fat and reduce saturated fat because of cholesterol concerns. It's a great device and it's never not in use at our house!
