Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt Maker

Customer Review: Might be nice if it worked.
Summary: 1 Stars

Bought this to make yogurt from the milk from our herd of goats we have. Received it and went to make our first batch, and low and behold neither of the timer buttons would work. And since you have to program in a time for the appliance to start, there was to be no yogurt. No problem I thought. Was simply unlucky enough to get a defective unit....hey it happens. Contacted Amazon, they sent out a replacement and picked up the detective unit. Got the replacement. Minute button works this time but the hour button does not. Well you can enter time now if you go by the minutes. Of course for a 10 hour batch of yogurt, that means pushing the button 600 times. Don't know about you but I'll pass, thanks.

Pros: Like the design (space saving over round setups), contatiners looked good and durable.

Cons: Now if they could only make one that actually works, it might be nice to actually try the machine and see how it actually makes yogurt.

Amazon can have the replacement back too. I'll find a different brand that actually works the way it is supposed to.

Customer Review: Healthy alternative!
Summary: 4 Stars

There was a little more work involved in making your own yogurt with this machine than I had realized but it was easy to do. The thermometer makes it very clear when to put the mixture into the cups. The reason why you are using this machine at all is so that it can incubate the yogurt at the correct temperature for a long period of time. Without it, this would be challenging.

I did notice that the yogurt was thicker and tangier than the store-bought yogurt. I do not think you will end up saving a lot of money making your own yogurt but you can control what goes in it which health enthusiasts will love.

I do wish the cups were glass, warming food in plastic containers does not seem very healthy to me. The caps are also on the containers way too tight, you have to have the Hulk's finger strength to get them off which I really had issues with. It was almost impossible for me to get them off and I almost hurt myself trying to do so. This is the main reason this product did not get 5/5 stars. Still, a very cool tool for people who really want to make their yogurt from scratch.

Customer Review: Absolutely THE BEST yogurt I've ever had
Summary: 5 Stars

I ordered this after wanting to save on the crazy price of natural yogurt (not the lime green or florescent pink variety with nasty artificial sweeteners). I made my first batch using the Cuisipro starter that I ordered at the same time as the yogurt maker. I followed the pretty simple instructions and 10 hours later + about 3 more in the fridge to chill and I had amazing yogurt. Way better than my current store bought brand (Fage brand) and it was so thick and creamy. So far I have eaten 2 a day.
Pro's-It's really easy to clean and use. The thermometer was super easy to use and know when to add the starter. Aesthetically pleasing design, I didn't mind having it out on the counter when friends stopped by.
Con's-The lids on the containers are super tight and hard to remove.
Overall I figured that I will start saving money on yogurt (and pay back the small investment on the machine within 2-3 weeks). It's really a small price for a great way to get your family back to basics in eating quality, unprocessed foods.

Customer Review: Does what it is supposed to do
Summary: 5 Stars

I can't say that it won't break, but in two months of biweekly use it did not have any problems.
All the batches I have done have perfectly consistent results if I prepare them in the same way. Small variations in protocols usually have negligible effects (e.g., +- 1 hr in "cooking time" and small variations in temperature when "boiling" or adding the starter), but sometimes they do. I am a scientist by training and a Ph.D. in chemistry so I have some idea about what I am talking about. I suspect that the lack of consistency found by some were more a statement about their cooking skills than a statement about the product. It doses exactly what it is supposed to do in a simple and clean way. The breaking of the jars and caps seems to require a remarkable degree of mishandling.
The fact that I use it continuously (that is, I never run out of yogurt) might partially explain the consistency I have found.
I used some dried Yogurt starter at the beginning and followed the instructions on the yogurt maker mostly. It worked.

Customer Review: Big disappointment
Summary: 1 Stars

One of the first appliances I replaced when returning to the States after having lived abroad for almost 20 years was my much-used SEB Yogurt Maker. What a disappointment this Donvier machine is by comparison! The Donvier makes the pleasure of homemade yogurt tedious and annoying...one might as well just make yogurt in the oven. With the Donvier, the milk must be preheated (?!) to a specific temperature and then left to cool (?!) before filling the plastic (?!) cups with ill-fitting lids, the cycle is interminably long, and the consistency of the finished product is unappetizing. What a contrast to the SEB -- add one plain (homemade or commercial) yogurt (and 1/4 cup of fruit-flavored syrup) to a quart of cold milk, swish a turn or two with a whisk to mix, pour into the glass (!) cups, let the machine run for 8 hours then pop on the perfectly-fitted lids and refrigerate. Surely there must be a 110V machine out there somewhere that is as easy to use and that yields the same commercial-quality results...
