Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisipro Donvier Electronic Yogurt MakerCustomer Review: Wish the containers were larger Summary: 3 Stars
I have made a couple of batches with it now. You have to heat the milk first, I use 2%, it is easier to do this in the microwave to decrease risk of burning the milk. I highly suggest getting a candy thermometer to get a more accurate reading. Then you need to wait for it to cool before you add your starter yogurt. I have been using about 1/4 c of FAGE. That is it on the prep work. Easy enough. The hardest part for me is timing it so that I am home or awake when the 10 1/2 hours are up to move it from the machine to the refrigerator. The yogurt comes out fairly creamy. I might try adding 1/2 hour more next time to increase it to 11 hours to see if that changes the consistency to an even more creamy and tart yogurt. Also, I have not used any dry milk just my 2% and starter. Dry milk is recommended for skim milk. I might try adding that to see how it changes the yogurt. You just have to experiment to see what tartness and creaminess you would like for your taste. My only complaint about the machine so far is that the containers are so small. The amount of yogurt they produce is about the same as a tiny container of store bought yogurt(think child size). I can easily eat 2 containers with a little granola or fruit. If you consume a lot of yogurt ( I eat it every day for breakfast) I suggest you purchase another set of containers to keep the batches going.
Customer Review: a few improvements Summary: 5 Stars
I'm really happy with the yogurt quality, and I think it is saving me money (though I eat a lot more yogurt now!)
A few suggestions for how to improve the product:
- a real thermometer would be nice. The one that comes with the product doesn't have any numbers on it, only "add starter" in a range. I am having trouble knowing exactly how hot to heat the milk because the thermometer doesn't have temperatures, or even notches. I think it is causing inconsistancies in my yogurt.
- it says the jars are dishwasher safe on the website, but in the package insert it says the lids are not. I have found that they are fine in the top rack of the dishwasher. I didn't like washing them by hand because I was worried that they were not getting sterile.
- It would be great to have more suggestions on how to flavor the yogurt. What flavors can you add before the milk is fermented? What should you add after the yogurt is made?
- There was very little trouble shooting information in the manual. I would like to see more specific instructions, more technical.
- Please just call the "starter" bacteria! or cultures! This is a fermented food, and we could understand this process better if we knew more about which strains and cultures to use, and how exactly they work.
Customer Review: Plastic Jars de-rated product Summary: 2 Stars
Product seems good and durable. This comes with accessories and a product manual as well as a thermometer to measure the right milk temperature (to add starter).
The issues that are bad with this one is the following:
1. They try to sell you the starters at a higher price.
First check the cost of the starter, then make your own decision!
2. The jars are made out of plastic (which was a killer for this maker).
If plastic jars do not matter for your opinion then I must tell you that the
yogurt maker is basically a constant heater, providing an exact temperature so
bacteria could grow in a better condition, in a time basis.
3. The manual does not contain how to make the yogurt, but some kinds of yogurts
never heard of.
So you want to make yogurt that you buy at your local grocery store?
Good luck with this one as there is no recipe for that. Rather you'll
get some other nice recipes, but if you have a kid at home you'll
probably want to feed him/her with a nice whole milk yogurt.
I returned it and getting other yogurt maker with crystal jars, then make a review and hopefully I can give a 5-star rating.
Good luck with your product!
Customer Review: The best yogurt I've ever tasted! Summary: 5 Stars
I love my yogurt maker! If you're one of those few unfortunate people who can't seem to make it work, maybe I can help. I have been using instant dry milk--any brand will do. (OR, you can use 4 cups of two-percent milk and mix in 1/2 cup instant dry milk. The instant dry milk seems to help it thicken.) I mixed 1 1/4 cups of instant dry milk into four cups of water. (Mix it in well, or you may have lumps.) I also heat the milk in the microwave for nine minutes instead of in a sauce pan on the stove. I've found that the temperature of the milk needs to be cooled to about 120 degrees before I can add the starter, not 110 to 115 as is printed in the instructions. (I use Dannon plain yogurt as a starter, and I add two heaping teaspoons instead of one.) Even though the thermometer included in the box works pretty well, I bought a candy thermometer, and it seems to work a lot better. I leave the milk and starter in the yogurt maker for 11 hours. It is thick and creamy! Once the yogurt has chilled in the refrigerator for approximately three hours, I remove it and add dry, flavored jello to taste. If you don't want sugar in your yogurt, you can add fruit or a number of other flavorings. It works like a charm! I've never tasted such great yogurt! I'd recommend this product to anyone!
Customer Review: easy to use yogurt maker Summary: 4 Stars
My main reason for getting the yogurt maker is to reduce trash - no more yogurt containers to toss into the landfill. The machine is very easy to use. The recipe is simple and straightforward. I wish the jars were glass instead of plastic, but I believe they are BPA-free. A big selling point - I can order more jars if I need to.
My only problem with the yogurt maker is the timer switch. I couldn't get it to work at all at first. I contacted (via email) the company. They told me I'd have to go through Amazon to return the machine. I tried working the switch again, and I've been able to figure out the idiosyncracies for now - just takes pushing the button at the right angle. I'm saving the box in case it fails, and I'll return it to Amazon.
I've only made one batch of yogurt. It turned out great. The yogurt can't be flavored prior to "cooking" it, so fruits, etc. are added after it's made. I did 10 1/2 hours for my first batch, and it was a tad thin. I'll add an hour next time.
A tip to those who don't think ahead - like me: don't start your batch of yogurt at a time that requires you to get up at 2:30 a.m. to put it in the frig after it's done! Lesson learned - and a good laugh on me. I was just anxious to try it out.
