Customer Review: Cuisipro Accutec Kitchen Rasp - As Sharp As They Claim, Perfect For Zesting

The Cuisipro Accutec Kitchen Rasp is a nicely made tool that is perfect for zesting citrus fruits like lemons or limes. It can also be used as a grater for veggies, chocolates and cheeses. To me the metal seems too thin to hold up to some of the harder cheeses I cook with. I plan to use this exclusively for zesting fruits to preserve the tool's sharpness.
For the longest time, I used nothing but the tips of a fork for zesting. The main advantage of this tool over those small fork zesters is that you can really control how much you zest down to the pith. You don't get the long strands that you would with a fork zester, but you can capture all of the rind with great precision.
DESIGN AND FEATURES
The blade is nice and long and is made from a thin stainless steel. The actual slits are small squares that jut-out slightly from the surface. It has a nice curvature to it and the sides turn up into walls that can act as a collection device when used upside down. So while it's true that it comes with no additional collection bin or cover, if you use it upside down you can collect all of your zest and then distribute it after-wards.
The 25-year limited warranty is a nice extra for peace of mind. It's impossible to know how good a warranty is until you have to use it. This tool feels like it will hold up to normal use, though it's not something I would subject to anything extraordinary.
The handle is made out of grey rubber, with a curved out end that is very comfortable to hold. Since this tool is rather long, the longer handle and nice grip are great features. It also has an end-piece on the other side so you can rest it down without having the metal touch anything.
One thing you have to keep in mind when cleaning this is that you can't run your sponge in both directions along the top surface. Those little square rasping teeth will destroy it. So you have to be careful to clean only in the direction of the teeth on the top, and then clean the inside of the rasp in the same way.
THE ALTERNATIVES
As a zester, there are some less expensive alternatives. You can always use a fork, and dedicated zesting forks like the Oxo Good Grips Lemon Zester will give you plenty of utility. What you give up is the precision and control of the Accutec which allows you to get much more rind off of your fruit.
The Pedrini Black & Satin Stainless Steel Cheese Grater is my personal preference for grating hard cheeses. It has a nicely curved surface and a few different zones for various sized shavings. The OXO Good Grips i-Series Hand Held Grater has a slightly thicker grating surface and is another nice alternative.
CONCLUSION
This is a great tool. It's probably a little too thin for full-time use as a grater but is perfect for zesting citrus fruit.
