Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven/Broiler, Brushed Stainless/Black

Customer Review: Good oven - beware warranty pitfalls...
Summary: 4 Stars

We had had this oven for a couple months when the door would no longer stay shut. I tried jamming a wooden spoon against it to hold it shut while cooking, but found this sort of absurd. So I called Cuisinart for warranty service. They said they'd replace my oven with a new one, but I had to pay to ship the oven to their warehouse in NJ and it would take a few weeks. In the meantime my husband found a set of little magnets at our local craft store, and fixed the problem! So I wasn't going to ship the oven to NJ - until a replacement oven arrived...before I even sent the first one out. Hmmmm.

Anyway, we're enjoying this toaster oven very much and use it practically every day. It is slower than a regular toaster, but cooks four pieces of toast/waffles all at once, so I figure its a fair trade. It does a nice job with open-faced sandwiches or chicken nuggets for the kids on the broiler pan, without having to heat up our full-sized oven. A practical choice especially for families with kids.

Customer Review: Worked great for a month, but...
Summary: 2 Stars

This oven made some great toast. Yes, I can still remember those days... but, like another reviewer said, the door quit staying closed. After a few weeks of irritation, I removed a screw from the device that keeps it open. No more problem and more great toast. Then after about a year of moderate use, the dang thing just up and decided that it, not me would decide what temperature to cook things at when baking (and it tended to like about 500 degrees. There are not many recipes that call for 500 degrees, especially for a toaster oven. Toast was a similar random process, but the toaster liked both undercooking and overcooking.

One important piece of advice for those seeking a toaster/oven- toasters make toast faster than toaster ovens, and this toaster oven makes toast slower than other toaster ovens because it's pretty large (for a toaster oven).

Should a $100 device last longer than a year? I guess it depends on whether you ask an appliance manufacturer or a consumer.

Customer Review: Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I am one of those people that use a toaster oven as a second oven. I cannot live without one. My previous one was a Black and Decker that was the largest I had ever had. It was really great. I loved it. However, the control area caught on fire and fried about 6 months after purchase. Now that I read other reviews on that product, I realize that I was lucky to get 6 full months.

Now the Cuisinart. I read reviews that said it was big. Bigger than average, but not BIG. I read about door issues, but mine works just fine. I have used this toaster oven at least 5 times daily since I received it a month ago and I really love it so far. I can't say that I can rate it on durability, but as far as even cooking it is excellent. It is the best toaster oven I have ever owned in the 15 years or so of buying them, and it truly cooks more like an oven than a "toaster oven." It also toasts great. Evenly on both sides, and super quick. In my opinion a great buy.

Customer Review: Disappointing
Summary: 1 Stars

Purchased the item based on reviews. Found the only merit is,possibly, its usefulness as a toaster.(But who needs that if they have a toaster?)

1. The door does not close securely unless slammed several times.
2. It's very easy to burn yourself. Although the sides remain cool enough, the back and top get very hot. (And it's easy to thoughtlessly hold the back while trying to get the door closed.)
3. The oven does not retain heat.
4. There is no indicator light to show when the oven
has reached the desired temperature.
5. There is no interior light.
6. When baking (e.g., croissants) the oven maintains its temperature by having the upper elements go on. Result: items get burnt on top.

I will donate this item to Goodwill (with some apprehension) rather than keep it since it's too much trouble to send it back.
BTW, its cost from Amazon ($100) was matched at local stores.

Customer Review: If there was ever a case for allowing zero-star reviews, this is it!

I've never written a review here but was compelled to do so as I need to do my part to lower the overall "star rating" for this piece of garbage. As with most negative reviews here, the door on ours started to fail after several months of use. It baked & toasted OK (not great, especially toasting), but the door began to need slamming to get it to shut, and just tonight my wife got frustrated and broke the handle while slamming it. It is now resting in our garbage can and awaiting delivery to the local landfill. This was my first and last Cuisinart purchase. Cusinart company is riding the brand's reputation but it's only a matter of time before their crappy manufacturing and quality standards catch up to them. Thanks to the other reviewer for pointing out that they merged with ConAir and lowered their quality - I had no idea! What was I thinking spending over $80 to make toast and cook fish sticks and pizza bagels, anyway?
