Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven/Broiler, Brushed Stainless/BlackCustomer Review: Excellent appliance for the modern kitchen Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this toaster oven based on the positive reviews and have been very happy with it for the last few weeks. The built quality is excellent and it looks appealing on my granite countertop. I like the fact the the toast timer does not tick like some of the cheaper models, though it does beep 5 times when it is finished toasting. It is a little slower toasting than my previous (budget) Black & Decker unit, probably because it is taller inside which means more area to heat up. The only other negative is related to the top heating element. For some reason, the top heating element turns on during the Bake operation but not always or all the time. Perhaps during the preheat phase it uses the top heating element to get the oven up to temperature. Or perhaps the units 900W cannot maintain the temperature in Bake mode without turning on both heating elements at certain times. So you need to make sure to put the rack at the lowest level during long baking cycles or cover the item so it doesn't get broiled on top. I typically use it for toast/bread, pizza, reheating, and broiling meats and fish. For those purposes it works great, is easy to clean, and I highly recommend it. With the lackluster competition I couldn't find any better choices, especially for less money.
Customer Review: Peeling Paint and Door Won't Shut! Same complaints as others! Summary: 2 Stars
I hate to be the I-told-you-so person in my family, but I didn't want to get a toaster oven. I like my counters clear and even the smallest toaster oven is a space hog, and this one isn't small. But my husband for some reason really wanted to get rid of our classic 2-slice toaster and get this oven so I relented. Although I miss my counter space, I actually came to appreciate being able to use our full size oven less, and I roasted a lot of vegetables and found it easy and convenient for that purpose. BUT, we've had it about 2 years and now I've just noticed that the interior black paint has peeled off, presumably falling into our food. I have 2 kids under 4 and I'm really upset about this. I spoke to customer service and after I described the problem and the fact that I was worried about harm to my kids, he asked, "Does the oven work?" What the! If that's the standard they are using, then this company stands for NOTHING. Also, annoying but not the end of the world is that the door of the oven, as sooooo many reviewers noted, does not shut. Slamming the door of the toaster oven every time you use it is annoying and wakes up my little ones (their bedroom is closest to the kitchen).
Customer Review: NO-GOOD, Fire Hazard Summary: 1 Stars
My family has owned this toaster for 1.5 years. As of tonight, we don't own a toaster, and we're lucky we still have a kitchen.
Yes, the door did not shut after a few months.
Yes, it always burned our food on the toast setting.
Yes, all of the interior paint was cracked and pealing, possibly indicating poor quality paint or extra hot conditions inside the toaster.
Still, I tried to bake 6 cut-and-bake cookies tonight. Without any preheating and prior to the timer going off, I ran to the kitchen only to find it full of smoke and a fire inside the oven. *Note* THE BEST ASPECT OF THIS TOASTER'S DESIGN IS THE PLASTIC HANDLES ON THE SIDE. I was able to hold them and run the thing out of the house, only to have to hose it down on the drive, as the flames began to consume the entire toaster.
It baked the cookies to charcoal prior to the given cooking time and much earlier then the first commercial break on the TV program I was viewing at the time.
This toaster oven didn't work well at any point in its short life, and it certainly would not have been worth the demise of my kitchen. DON'T DO IT! Buy a better one.
Customer Review: Cuisinart TOB-50 Toaster Summary: 5 Stars
After looking at about every toaster oven on the market I settled on the Cuisinart TOB-50. I did not need a convection feature as we use it largely for toast, reheating, potatoes, etc. It is well built and very simple to use. My wife has arthritic hands and the controls are very easy to use. The unit does not use a twist and turn timer like most toaster ovens. It apparently uses an electronic timer. You set the controls to DARK,MEDIUM,LIGHT or somewhere in between and a bell will chime three times when your toast is ready and it will automatically shut off. You will need to experiment to see just where you like your setting to be for your personal taste. I really like this feature. The bread crumb tray removes from the rear but that does not bother me. With Cusinart parts are easy to get on their web site if you ever need a new tray or knob. The cord is short on this unit for safety reasons. It is a nice looking unit and 95% or more of all the reviews I have read all over the internet give it 4-5 stars. If you do not need convection I highly recommend this unit.

I purchased a new Cuisinart TOB-50 through Amazon...... a free shipping deal. It arrived promptly and in good condition. There was one flaw; the bell indicating the end of the toast cycle didn't work. Cuisinart informed me to return it under warranty to Amazon for a replacement. I did that. Amazon credited me a small portion of my return mailing cost. Why only a portion, you ask? Because Amazon charged me for the freight that they originally did not! I received the replacement oven promptly and in good condition. The bell didn't work on this one either. Also, the toast darkness control works, sort of; the door has to be slammed to stay closed and the brushed aluminum is a rough surface trap for "everything" and is basically uncleanable. I expressed my displeasure to the Customer No-Service Dept at Cuisinart and, of course, received no answer.
The bottom line is: the design is fine, but the components and assembly of this Chinese piece of crap are poor.
Do yourself a favor, pass on this one!
