Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart TOB-50 Classic Toaster Oven/Broiler, Brushed Stainless/BlackCustomer Review: A Serious Piece of Junk. (NOTE: REVIEW EDITED!) Summary: 1 Stars
Bought this Cuisinart 6-9 months ago. From the start it did not toast very evenly, and when baking or re-heating something like pizza or chicken, tended to burn the outside while leaving the inside kind of cold or raw.
About two months ago, the door decided not to close all the way, and two days ago, the "Toast Bake Broil" control decided to just spin, make sick clicking noises, and generally not work at all. It was now stuck "on," and needed to be plugged in and unplugged to make work.
This morning, it decided to only toast on one side. And of course, to reach around to plug/unplug it, the poorly insulated surfaces burn us.
There was only two people using this, with only light to moderate and gentle use.
Piece of Junk. Sayonara Cuisinart!
Edit:
Contacted Cuisinart customer service. Customer service was prompt, courteous, and efficient. In honoring the warranty, they sent me a new unit, which arrived fairly promptly. The new unit has a slightly different door, which is improved. It has a more substantial door handle, and the hinge works quite well, as it should...no more being stuck open at all.
The new unit toasts evenly, bakes well, and overall works quite well. It's been about three months, and the unit has held up fine so far.
Upon receiving the new unit, I boxed the old one, called Cuisinart customer service--again, customer service was a surprisingly pleasant experience, and they scheduled a UPS pickup, which was quite convenient.
Overall, it worked out very well. Apparently Cuisinart has fixed the bugs in this model. I would change my rating to a higher score if allowed, and would buy Cuisinart again.
Customer Review: easier way to cook toasted cheese sammys Summary: 5 Stars
I like this toaster oven so far. We have had our one b&d for 16 years, it finally went up in flames;( I researched for over a week, went to BestBuy, Target, Kmart and Walmart and played with all their machines. Wow the timer thing is a pain you have to go past 10 and back to make toast, the digital thing would have to reset constantly since we unplug our machine all the time. I needed an easy way for my 5 year old to make his grilled cheese toast. Yes my 5 year old. He has been making himself toast for over 2 years in our old toaster, just a press of a leaver and it pops up when done. Or turn the switch up "in the air" and cook a pizza for our 9 year old and 11 year old. We never new how long things would cook just if it looked done it was. I love that this toaster has a knob that goes up in the air to (350) and has 3 settings Bake, Toast, and Broil the last knob is the setting for the toast. That is it! (so cool) If it is on Toast you can leave it there and they just hit the button "Start". When it is done with its level for toasting it stops on its own! I have 5 kids and I needed an easier way to cook toasted cheese sammys. And hitting start was simple and easy. I guess I will modify this review if the toaster starts to break, but after 16 years with my b&d I am sure this is ok;) I don't like that I can't open the bottom of it to clean it but I guess the pull out tray is something I will learn to work with, maybe it will be easier than opening the tray over the sink and scrubbing it clean. So far the easiest toaster oven I have found out there to operate. It even has a beep when the toast is done:)
Customer Review: I like my toaster oven! Summary: 5 Stars
Four months ago, when I bought this oven, I was desperately needing a replacement for my Euro-Pro TO285 X/L Toaster Oven with Rotisserie. A thermostat malfunction and other silly quality issues had caused it to grow cold all too soon. At first I wasn't sure if this new oven would be as big as I thought I wanted. I bought it anyway, and am very glad I did!
This oven is easy to clean with it's removable bottom tray, and easy to use with it's big simple dials--nothing digital-age here. It toasts bread just as fast as a regular toaster, which I'm still getting used to. The two pans that come with it aren't junk, either. I haven't had occasion to use the drip tray yet, but the baking pan is in constant use. It is perfect to bake fish for a family of 4--and in quick time too! Anything from prepared fish sticks to fish with sauces--tater tots too. I've baked turkey loaves, casseroles and even cornbread! Though it isn't big enough to hold a 13x9x2" pan (as the Euro Pro was), it will hold a 9x9x2" nicely (it is a toaster oven after all). Since the elements are only a few inches from the top of the 9x9x2" pan, there is a little trick to making cornbread. Cornbread tends to toast and burn on the top, but if you make sure to preheat your oven, and turn the temperature down 25 degrees, you won't have a problem. Even with the temp turned down, your cornbread will probably be done 5 minutes early! Did I mention this thing cooks fast?
Overall, I think Cuisinart's good name is safe in this oven. If I had to do it over again, I'd buy this oven and I think you will be happy with it too.
Customer Review: Caveat emptor! Summary: 1 Stars
This toaster oven has two negatives--one is tolerable, the other is not.
The crumb tray must be removed from the rear of the oven. That is awkward and many competitive manufacturers offer a front-loading crumb tray.
After a few months of use the oven door would not close tightly allowing heat to escape. I will not tolerate such a malfunction in a toaster oven
that I own.
I discarded the oven and purchased a new oven from a different manufacturer.
The new oven is a convection oven (the TOB-50 is not)and cost less than the
faulty-functioning Cuisinart.
The internet is replete with numerous door complaints on this model. It was interesting to note that one unhappy buyer actually took the oven apart and found the door mechanism unfixable. I called a local small appliance repair facility and was told that Cuisinart, unlike other manufacturers, will not sell any replacement repair parts for its products.
The reviews indicate that some angry buyers went to the bother and cost of obtaining replacement ovens from Cuisinart only to discover the replacement units had the same defect. When I called the Cuisinart customer relations office I was told: (1) I should take the oven back to the store that sold it to me and (2) there have been absolutely no design changes to the door apparatus during the course of the production runs. Apparently some buyers were convinced to seek a replacement oven when they were told the door problem had been fixed.
Caveat emptor!
Customer Review: A partial review Summary: 3 Stars
This is a partial review because we haven't tried to use it yet (may return). Purchased to replace a Cuisinart TOB-30 that developed flaky switches just after the 3 year warrenty expired.
The TOB-50 is new this year (2007). I assumed that this unit was similar to "classic" TOB-30 except controls along bottom instead of on the side. WRONG!
The exterior of this oven has same height as TOB-30. Since the controls now occupy the bottom 2" or so, that means the opening is narrower. The distance between the lowest rack position and the top heater elements is 1 1/4 inch (or 25%) less than the TOB-30. So forget cooking whole chickens, and I wonder how you don't burn everything else? Also, the drip tray now must be removed from the *back* of the unit, and the opening for that is very narrow...so if you've got a big glob of food is burned onto the drip tray I imagine that removing it from oven will be a royal pain.
Note that neither Amazon nor Cuisinart give any clue that the (usable) interior space is smaller than the TOB-30.
[update Dec, 2008] We returnd this unit and purchased another TOB-30. Have had for almost a year and no problems, though we noticed that they cheapened on the drip tray, etc so we are continuing to use the trip tray from our previous TOB-30. The new drip tray was noticeably lighter and had a different finish which made it impossible to clean.
