Customer Review: A perfectly balanced toaster oven, does it all very well.

When my 10 year old Black and Decker toaster over died, I started looking for a replacement that could toast 4 slices at a time. Black and Decker's most recent toasters don't seem to get a whole lot of respect, so I looked elsewhere. I ended up with a Delonghi digital toaster oven, but that thing could turn any food item into a charcoal briquette. So after much consideration, I picked up one of these at Bed Bath & Beyond with a 20% coupon for less than $65.
I know a lot of people have had trouble with the rather fidgety multifunction knob on this unit, and I could easily see it breaking - but as long as you keep the unit unplugged when not in use, it shouldn't pose a fire hazard. There's a 3 year warranty - and if I get that long out of it, I will be happy with it. Believe me, this toaster more than makes up for its shortcomings as compared to its contemporaries at the same price range.
First off, it's got a TON of space, you can easily fit four slices of toast and then some. It has 3 different rack positions, a very nice non-stick pan, broiler plate and pull-out crumb tray. Its temperature settings are very accurate, as are its toasting settings. The finish is unique for a toaster oven has it has an easily cleanable matte black finish and feels pretty sturdy overall.
This unit *does* get very warm on the outside, but I've found this to be commonplace with all of the toaster ovens I've used. There are standoffs to keep the toaster from backing all the way up to your counter backsplash - and for good reason. You do need to be aware of the orientation of the toaster and keep it away from other materials. Otherwise, it is fairly compact and well designed.
Did I mention this thing makes perfect toast? That's a rare trait in a toaster oven, but this one does - and that's my primary use for it, aside from the occasional pizza slice / restaurant leftover reheat.
All-in-all, I would recommend this unit. The only real downside is its track record of failure. Obviously having only owned this for a few weeks, I haven't encountered it. One would hope that since it's been in production for so long now that Cuisinart has redesigned the internals to prevent these kinds of problems. Either way, I've decided to err on the side of caution and keep it unplugged (just as the manual recommends). So, with that in mind, it more than suits my needs and warrants a 4 star review.
