Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart PSC-400 Stainless Steel 4-Quart Programmable Slow Cooker

Customer Review: Great slow cooker
Summary: 4 Stars

After hanging on to my crock pot for 32 years, my mother suggested I upgrade to this one. It has features I never even dreamed of! Eg.I never realized you should never leave the house if you have one of the old-fashioned crock pots cooking. I always did... But with this one, you just set the timer and when the food's done, it goes into a "warm" mode eliminating the worry that it might go up in flames while you're out!

I also really love that I can take the insert out to wash. Plus it's very spacious. I have yet to fill it up for just the two of us, but nice to know I can cook for a small crowd if needed. The retractable cord is terrific. The unit looks so good I just leave it out on the counter - which also encourages me to use it more often. Important safety feature if you have children: the insulation is more than adequate, keeping the entire unit a safe temperature. Even the insert can be handled without pot holders.

Get this one - well worth the extra money!

Customer Review: Very Happy with Cuisinart
Summary: 5 Stars

I had the All-Clad slow cooker that Cook's Illustrated rated #1 in their tests-- it worked for two years, and then died. All-Clad customer service doesn't repair their slow cookers, and they only offered my 30% off toward a replacement. At $190 retail, that's $130 for a slow cooker that lasted two years-- no thank you!

At 4 quarts, this Cuisinart model is smaller than my previous 6.5 qt All-Clad, but for our family of three, it's just right. It's also lighter, smaller, and easier to store in the pantry closet. I love the retractable power cord-- no more trying to find a way to tuck the cord into the top of the slow cooker when putting it away!

I've used it twice, and so far, it's performed wonderfully. As a few reviewers have pointed out, the plastic-plated handles are cheap-looking, but that's an aesthetic flaw I can live with.

Overall, five stars.

Customer Review: Really Good Cooker With Some Minor Flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

good:
- elegant appearance, looks good next to all the other stainless appliances
- cooks very well, we've been using it for a few weeks now and all the meals have turned out delicious.
- controls are very well done
- auto warming function
- generally runs quiet w/o any problems

bad:
- in some circumstances, I think the lid is just too light so that 3-4hrs into a "high" heat dish that has alot of water in it, it will start to vibrate up and down and you'll hear steam coming out the top (I'm going to speak to cusinart about this, but we cook nearly all of our stuff on low so this rarely impacts us).
- we've noticed that many dishes seem to take longer to cook than they should (e.g. 8hr dish takes 9-10hrs on low). We're still monitoring to see if its a general problem or specific to the cusinart.

Customer Review: Just right in every way
Summary: 5 Stars

This slow cooker is just the right size for a small family...or just two people who like to have a bit extra to freeze or use during the week. The winding cord seems like such a minor feature but I appreciate it every time I pull the cooker off the shelf. More appliances should have this! The programmable controls are easy to use and straight forward. It's easy to clean and the ceramic pot is attractive when out of the cooker. I haven't found anything about it that doesn't work just as it should. The only unanswered question is how long will it last? May be pricey compared to other cookers but you get what you pay for with this unit. Definitely would recommend it to anyone looking for an attractive, well made, slow cooker that does very well just what it is supposed to do.

Customer Review: One of the best investments I've ever made!
Summary: 5 Stars

I already had an oval 6 qt. programmable cooker from Rival, the granddaddy of all crock pots. I loved it, but it's a little large for my family of three unless you plan to make extra. Most recipes I found in my crock pot cook books were for 3-4 qt models, so I went in search of a programmable model. It's fantastic! It's the right size for almost everything, and the added features of the Simmer and Warm heat levels are such an asset, especially since it automatically kicks over to "warm" for up to 8 hours after the cook cycle ends. I haven't had anything scorch, and it's so nice to "fix and forget" on days I work and my family eats in shifts. I'd buy this again in a heartbeat!
