Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream Maker

Customer Review: A little fix for the loose motor arm
Summary: 5 Stars

While I agree with most of the positive remarks from other reviewers, I too was bothered by the apparent loose connectivity of the motor arm. I remedied this with a simple elastic strap with plastic coated flat hooks that I secure to the compressor motor vents. If you keep an ear peeled to the operation sounds, you will hear the motor reverse it's direction when the product begins to stiffen up. Then remove it and store in the freezer to harden up.(after mixing in any additives like fruit & nuts) I've made up custard mix in advance, refridgerated overnight, taken a bunch of different additives, and shown up at parties and picnics with the maker. Allowing people to make their own soft serve ice cream creations has always been the hit of the party, and resulted in a number of subsequent purchases of the machine. All year long it's one of the favorite machines in my kitchen.

Customer Review: Broken out of the box and "Out of Warranty" on first Day?
Summary: 1 Stars

I received my unit as a present. The electric conection of the motor arm was damaged when I opend the box. The connection is held in place with three bent metal tabs and one of them had broken off and the connector had slid into the motor arm and could no longer be attached. When I called Cuisinart, they said that the unit was "Out of Warranty". I asked if that meant the unit was more than three years old (bear in mind I thought I was buying a "new" unit), and they said yes it was more than three years old based on the serial number.

Cuisinart indicated that I should send in a copy of my order and they might still honor the warranty. I said no thanks and returned the unit. Three years (at least) in a warehouse is not a product that I consider "new"... especially since it contains chemicals that degrade over time.

Caveat Emptor. Buyer beware.

Customer Review: Fantastic Ice Cream Maker
Summary: 5 Stars

I previously owned the White Mountain Electric Ice Cream maker. It was great, though horribly noisy and messy. The Cuisinart ice cream maker makes no more noise than my Kitchen Aid Mixer. Our kitchen is open to our living room and my husband had no trouble watching TV while I made ice cream. The ice cream was made in 35 minutes and came out unbelievably creamy and silky. The cleanup was a breeze. No more salt and no more ice is absolutely fantastic. And the ones where you have to freeze the bowl first never make ice cream this creamy and firm. The arm will not pop up if you install it correctly. There are prongs on the arm that slide in the plastic lid that keep it in place. Sometimes it is not the machine but the user that is in error. This ice cream maker was worth every penny. I am exceedingly happy with my purchase and highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Great machine
Summary: 4 Stars

I was so excited that there's finally an afforable compressor model to choose from. It's super easy to use, nothing to learn really. As long as you get your mixture right, you're all set. It really freezes well. My first batch of sorbet was way too mushy, I suppose it's my mixture, the machine really froze it as much as it could. The ice crystals were very fine and evenly distributed.

Some people say that it's loud, it's not quiet, but it's acceptable. Afterall, there is a motor and a compressor. It sounds the same as my previous Cuisinart freeze-the-bucket verion. Those models are just NOT worth it. They never worked for me anyway.

My one issue is that the inner blade tends to get stuck and trap the ingredients (especially when you have other solids in the mixture). I need to push it to loosen it.

Customer Review: I would rate it a zero if possible
Summary: 1 Stars

I read the other reviews and was optimistic. Let me tell you, I tried four times after reading the manual and re-purchasing ingredients and it does not work. It does however make an excellent paper-weight and does stir the ingredients! I had only soup after four attempts-I even chilled the ingredients in freezer first. This is an awful machine that does not work. Now maybe mine was broken in shipping but if it is that sensitive then you do not want to order it-by the way if it is ever tilted on its side or upside down you have to let it sit for over 24 hours before you can use it and I found it on my doorstep on its side despite the "This side up" signs all over it-apparently that is rocket science. I am going back to my messy but functional ice and salt cranker. I can not tell you how disappointed I am.
