Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart ICE-50BC Supreme Ice Cream Maker

Customer Review: Works, but ALWAYS requires additional freezing...
Summary: 4 Stars

I've made 2-3 batches per week for over 3 weeks now, and it DOES make good ice cream (technically, I've mostly used it only for frozen yogurt because I'm lactose intolerant). Here are MY opinions...

THE GOOD:

* Easy to set up & use.
* Fairly noisy, but not NEARLY what people have been whining about online.
* Easy to clean.
* Easy to add "mixings" (although VERY tricky to know just when it's "within the last 5 minutes".
* Can make batch after batch without pre-freezing anything (just rinse metal bucket & mixing blade).
* "Set the timer and walk away".
* Unlimited flavor choices (whatever you can think of, you can try making).
(I've even added that "DQ-style 'frozen candy shell' topping" in layers when I'm transferring to a new container to freeze... YUMMY!!!)

THE "NOT-SO-GOOD" BUT NOT "BAD" EITHER:

* Pretty darn pricey.
* Can't add mixings too early (they'll mix to bottom & cause blade to stop too early).
* ALWAYS requires additional freezing time (definitely VERY "soft serve" results, even after the full hour).

I used to have one of those old "pre-freeze the container" ice cream makers, and that was a TOTAL pain (and you were always limited to only one batch per day). This machine allows me to make a flavor "I" like, then right afterward make a flavor someone else likes, and so on... With no pre-freezing, no salt, no ice... It also makes frozen drinks, sorbets & sherbets, etc. Just set the timer to the full 60 minutes & walk away. I've been trying to gauge "looking at the consistency" after about 45 minutes to try figuring out when to add the mixings (the book says to try waiting until the last 5 minutes). If you wait until there is only 5 minutes left on the timer, it may be too late; if you add them too early, they all mix down to the bottom & then cause the blade to stop mixing before the mix is properly frozen... That's the biggest disappointment for me, but I've also added the mixings manually as I pour the ice cream into a container for the freezer (still works, but just not quite as 'blended' that way).

Also, I have noticed that it does help freeze better if you DO pre-freeze the metal container even just WHILE you're mixing your base (before actually using the machine). As all references will tell you, the colder ALL of your ingredients and parts are before you start, the better everything will turn out. It's absolutely NOT necessary to pre-freeze anything with this machine, since it has it's own compressor built in, and that's the main reason I wanted to give it a try.

Over all, I'm absolutely glad I bought this machine, and if it's price is not too high for you, I would definitely recommend it. None of the parts are dishwasher safe, but it's incredibly easy to clean the blade & mixing bowl-- it's not like things stick to it anyway, so a little hot water & a sponge does the trick in no time... I was concerned about the noise complaints at first, but give me a break... Why do people expect everything to be "whisper quiet" these days? No; you wouldn't want to use this machine when "the baby is sleeping", but it makes less noise than my dishwasher, and it's also a lot quieter than a blender. It's far quieter than something like a garbage disposal. It actually sounds to me more like a family of 6 using their electric toothbrushes all at the same time (LOL). For me, it's usually being used in the kitchen while I'm in at least the next room anyway, so what's the big deal? Stop trying to make a secret batch, and you won't have to worry about the noise... ;-p

The two reasons I gave this a rating of 4 out of 5 stars is because:

A. I do think it is still over-priced.
and
B. I do think that (for this price) Cuisinart could have worked out a better way to ensure the ice cream is more-frozen, and could sort of "let you know" when you're in the last 5 minutes (to add your fixings so they're more evenly mixed in)...

But, I love it, love it, love it...
Nothing like experimenting with your own flavors WHENEVER YOU WANT TO!!!
