Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Price Change! Summary: 3 Stars
Last Monday this item was selling for $65. My sister had just gotten the 1.5 quart one and said it was great, but I liked the looks of this one better and for the extra $16 dollars it would have been worth it to me. I waited to order it however, since I was going to visit her and I wanted to see hers for myself. I returned home yesterday, sat down today (6 days later) to order, and was very unhappy and surprised to see that in 6 days the price had gone up to $79!! At this point I must seriously reconsider, and am attempting to browse the internet for a better deal! Also to consider the KitchenAid ice cream attachment.
P.S. After posting the above comment, I went to the Cuisinart web page and found this item to be selling there for $79.99, not the $145 retail price that is given on Amazon, but $1 more than the Amazon price..of course that price does not include shipping. I have bought many things at Amazon and have been quite happy with them but, as with any purchase, it always pays to do your homework! I have just ordered a new factory refurbished one for $60 with free UPS shipping...so we'll see how that goes. (After doing some research on the KitchenAid attachment it seemed to have a couple of issues, such a messy overflow being one.) The refurbished Cuisinart unit comes with a 90 day warranty from Cuisinart. I have bought factory refurbished items before and not had any problems so I am planning on eating some great ice cream soon!!
P.P.S. Amazing!! Today (8/17), just one day later it is now down to $72? It was $79 yesterday and $65 seven days ago! I really do not understand. Does anyone?
Customer Review: Great machine. Don't buy commercial ice cream anymore,. Summary: 5 Stars
I really like my 2 qt Cuisnart ice cream maker. Its performance is excellent, though I do agree it is a little noisy. I've made gallons and gallons since I first bought it and have found it is the recipe you use that makes the difference in the ice cream's consistency. I bought the Ben & Jerry's cookbook and have modified the Cream Base recipe included. I mix a double-batch at one time and chill half to make the following day. The recipe calls for 1 cup milk, 2 eggs, 3/4 cup sugar and 2 cups heavy cream. I beat the eggs, then add the sugar and milk. I place this mixture in the top of a double boiler, stirring constantly. I use a candy thermometer, I bring the mixture up to 170 degrees, stirring constantly. (I don't like to use raw eggs as the original recipe called for). Set double boiler in cold ice water to cool. Then chill and add 1 cup heavy cream and 1 cup fat-free half & half instead of the 2 cups heavy cream called for in the original recipe. Add whatever flavorings you want and place in frozen ice cream maker bowl and follow instructions from Cuisinart. Our family favorite is Maple Walnut. Just add 1/4 cup maple syrup at the same time you add the heavy cream and half & half. 5 minutes before ice cream is finished, add 1/3 cup toasted walnuts. Delicious. After freezing my ice cream, the consistency is good but just a little hard. I slip the container in the microwave for 15 seconds and its easy to dip the ice cream. Customer Review: This is the deal! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this after trying unsuccessfully to buy a used SIMAC machine on ebay. Now I wonder why I bothered trying to buy a huge, heavy and used machine.
I LOVE this, my family LOVES it!! It's so easy to start a batch before dinner and it's ready for dessert. Yes, it's not whisper quiet and yes you have to put the bowl into the freezer in the morning, but these are not issues at all for me. The style is nice and modern, which is good because it sits on the counter since we use it so much.
The ice cream consistency is like a DQ Blizzard when it comes out, also a plus for my family. It hardens up more like store-bought ice cream if you put it in the freezer and leave it overnight.
The best thing is that we have control over the ingredients that go into our ice cream so it's not loaded with preservatives (a naturopath told me that ice cream manufacturers don't have to list all the ingredients on the label - maybe a bunch of hooey and I'm inclined to think so, but who really knows!). It's definitely cheaper than quality store bought ice cream, even on sale, and I use expensive ingredients like goat's milk.
Here's a recipe I found on the internet and have been using:
3 C milk (we use goat's milk)
1 TBS good quality vanilla (we use Fair Trade, want to try actual bean soon
3/4 C sweetener (I use less sugar, more like 1/2C+ and plan to experiment with xylitol and agave)
We add in lots of things, like crushed Halloween candy, nuts, chocolate powder to make chocolate, etc.
This is a great gift for ice cream lovers!
Customer Review: Delicious Creations with flavor and fun Summary: 4 Stars
This machine has been really neat to use. It's has a very small counter foot print, everything stores within itself, and it's very easy to use and clean. The quality of ice cream, yogurt, sorbet or mixed drink is dependent upon what you place into the freeze bowl before you switch it on. I've made ice cream, ice milk, frozen yogurt, frozen drinks and everything mixed up quite well and were very flavorful. The more fat in the mix the better the consistency and flavor. The ice milk did freeze up nice but after going into the deep freeze it hardened up too much. My recommendation is to stick with the full flavor varieties of ice cream and yogurt.
However, sugar free drinks did not freeze well at all in the machine. They tended to cause the machine to run hard and stop when the ice built up on the sides. That nice slushy granular ice texture never formed and I had to stop the machine and pour warm water into the bowl to remove the ice. You need the sugar to combine with the ice to get he granulated texture so I suggest to sticking to the real thing and use sugar.
Cleanup is fast and simple and took just 2 to 3 minutes and every component was cleaned and the freeze bowl was back in the freezer ready for the next mixed drink or luscious creamy dessert. You need to be careful with the freeze bowl and make sure that you refreeze the bowl upside down so any water can run out of it while it's drying and freezing.
You won't be disappointed when you purchase this machine, and you will have loads of fun creating a plethora of frozen delights.
Customer Review: Fast and easy homemade ice cream without the mess Summary: 5 Stars
No crushed ice and rock salt. It uses a double-walled container/bowl that needs to be in the freezer for about 24 hours for best results. Of course it will depend on your freezer settings and how much time it is out of the freezer. Your mileage may vary. I have "gotten away" with 12 hours, but the final product is very soft and it takes longer to make. If after 45 minutes the ice cream isn't ready, then the bowl probably didn't freeze long enough. Put it in the freezer for an hour or two. It will be just as delicious, but will be more dense. It's best to transfer the ice cream to a plastic container with a lid so it won't absorb freezer odors. Ours never lasts long enough for this to be an issue. Store the bowl in the freezer so it's ready for next time.
While it is larger than the ICE-20, it's still only 2 quarts. I've found this to be ideal for spur-of-the-moment ice cream fun for just my family. However, don't throw away your larger churn just yet. You'll need it for parties. But because it is small, I find that I'm more willing to experiment with flavors since I won't be "wasting" it if it doesn't turn out right. But the only time that happened is when I used 100% Splenda. (If you want to save calories/carbs, experiment with one of the sugar alcohols like Erythritol or Xylitol. They yield a better tasting product with better texture.)
Overall, I am very pleased with this product. It couldn't be any easier to use. Simply freeze the bowl, put in the mixed ingredients and 20-30 minutes later you have great tasting ice cream.
