Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Makes Great Homemade Ice Cream Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased the factory refurbished unit and that made it a very good buy. I have had the unit a few weeks and made many batches so far. Each has met or exceeded my expectations. No more store bought ice cream for me. Strawberry with fresh strawberrys and coffee are my best so far but one with real vanilla beans was also awesome!!!! I recommend the custard ( French ) recipes where you cook the eggs and milk. Also, I go with lesser fat cream and milk, and the taste is fine with lessor fat. If it calls for heavy cream I go with Half and Half. The recipe part of the manual is less that it should be, but there are loads of great free recipes on the Net if you do some research. Some reviews I have read say it is too noisey, but I disagree. If you don't want noise , buy a hand crank unit. I had one but that was too much work. I like turning it on and having the ice cream ready in about a half hour. One thing, be prepared to spend some time in the kitchen. Like I say, the custard recipes are the best so far but they do require quite a bit of work, both cooking and cleaning up afterwards. But all in all it is well worth it. I can't see buying the store ice cream when I can have first class homemade. Vanilla made with REAL vanilla beans. Strawberry made with fresh strawberries (but I bet frozen berries will work just fine). Coffee made from fresh brewed coffee, not instant like the recipe in the books says. I got one off the Net where you brew some coffee first. All in all a good value . I have not gotten into the other frozen treats yet but that will come very very soon, trust me on that. I highly recommend this unit. If you have a large family, you might want to buy a spare freezer bowl or get the unit with the freezer built in, but that is much more money.
Customer Review: I am with the majority of you...It's GREAT! Summary: 5 Stars
Well....
FIRST!
Had I actually paid attention to what 95% of you are saying I would have frozen my new bowl for AT LEAST 24 HOURS!
**Did I mention the bowl needs to be frozen for AT LEAST 24 HOURS BEFORE using the machine**
Now that I have that little piece of reality out there....since I didn't LISTEN to what all you wonderful people told me I will now say it....I should have listened. (head hung in shame)
OK...we have the ugly stuff over with.
For those of you who left BAD reviews on this machine....let me say...I have not yet tried any other ice-cream BUT the custard type BUT if I really loved anything other then CUSTARD ice-cream I would just get Breyers from the store. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE good, rich custard ice-cream and can't even begin to find what I want so I am now making it....I look very forward to trying out other types of frozen treats but that is the reason I got this.
I really LIKE this machine and other's say it's LOUD....yes, it is not whisper quiet but not horrible...and well worth the noise. I just put it on and do other things while it works it magic.
The reason for purchase of THIS machine was the Cuisinart name...it did NOT disappoint.
I would say if you are thinking about this model then go for it...enjoy!
Needless to say my first batch tanked...big time...ALL MY FAULT! I just made some custard peach for my mother-in-law who is coming for a visit and it turned out excellent!
Also on the advice of another reviewer here I have purchased the Ben & Jerry's ice-cream book and am waiting for that to arrive.
THANK YOU all for your reviews on this machine they have been SO helpful to me...even the bad ones have some good information! So, THANKS!
Customer Review: Solved the variable and soft ice cream problem Summary: 5 Stars
Hey everyone.
I had read and experienced the variable quality of the resultant Ice Cream produced.
I have tried 3 recipes so far.
First I tried the Frozen Yogurt recipe in the book which came out some what soupy.
Then I tried the Quick easy Ice Cream using condensed sweetened milk on a popular Ice Cream recipes site.
It came out as liquid, little more than mixed milk.
Finally I tried the Custard Based recipe in the book. "Deep Dark Chocolate Ice Cream" It came out perfectly!
I would also like to share with everyone a trick I came up with, that will make perfect Ice Cream every time!
Follow the directions and let your freezer bowl freeze for at least 12hrs.
1st as suggested by everyone, once you have made the custard based mix put it in the freezer long enough for it to chill! Forget about the milk, substitute half and half!
2nd Place your chilled mix in the freezer bowl.
3rd and here's the epiphany! Cut a square of tin foil large enough to cover the entire top plastic part of the machine. Then loosely fill a 1 Gallon zip-lock bag with Ice-cubes.
Place that bag on top of the tin foil that is on top of the ice cream maker! The Tin Foil/Ice Bag forces cold air down into your machine and assists in freezing your ice cream!
It was amazing how cold and solid my Ice Cream became! It was almost a problem getting the Ice Cream out of the freezer bowl and into my storage containers!
Oh, Finally place your storage containers in sealed 1 Gallon Zip Lock bags to protect your ice cream from freezer burns, etc.
Well hope that helps everyone, and lets have a great summer full of home made Ice Cream!
Customer Review: Awesome and Easy! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this after much debate about whether or not I needed a two quart ice cream maker or just go with the original Cuisinart $49.95 one. I am so glad i bought this one. It is so great. Easy to use, makes alot of ice cream,so sleek looking.
I have a tiny kicthen and everytime I turn around I am buying something that will clutter my counterspace, but I have to say this I don't mind. It is square, not to bulky and the cord fits nicely up inside the machine. It doesn't dangle or anything. It's right next to my KitchenAid.
I have made two recipes out of the manual that comes with the machine. I usually don't like "manual recipes" however, these are fantastic. The Mango Gelato was a huge hit with family and friends. One girl who doesn't like ice cream, liked it. The simple ice creams that dont require making a custard, you just mix all the ingredients together and freeze, I was thinking it would be terrible. It wasn't, so you can make ice cream in 30minutes from start to finish with those recipes.
I do keep the bowl in the freezer like others suggested with the smaller ice cream maker. It has been very useful to have it already frozen when I am ready to make ice cream.
As far as noise, it is not as quiet as I thought, but don't let that scare you. It's not like turning on a blender and leaving it running for 25 minutes. It's not an annoying noise. Not like the old ice cream makers with the ice and stuff. It is fun to watch it churn too. So the noise just fades to the background.
It's very interactive and a great thing to do with kids and company.
I really can't say enough good. One of the best appliance investments I have mad yet.
Customer Review: A Christmas gift I love!!!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I got this ice cream maker as a Christmas gift and oh my gosh, i absolutely love it! I made my first batch of vanilla ice cream and it tasted just like Breyer's, only it doesn't have all those nasty, unhealthy ingredients. I used non-homogenized, organic milk and cream and organic sugar to make it healthier. Yes, it does make noise, but it wasn't as loud as I thought it would be. My five month old daughter who doesn't like loud noises was fine with it. I ran the maker for 25 minutes, but I think I should have done it longer since the consistency was still a bit runny, but no problem. I scooped it into an empty ice cream carton and froze it. It came out perfect!
I have a tiny freezer and the bowl does not take up that much space. Its no big deal that you have to freeze it first either. You just have to plan ahead or keep it in the freezer all the time so you can whip it out whenever you want ice cream spur of the moment. Its probably not a good idea to make multiple batches anyway - eating that much ice cream can't be good for your waist!
I thawed the bowl a bit after using, washed and dried it and put it back in the freezer. Easy peasy! It also makes a lot of ice cream as well - 2 quarts. For my husband and I, its more than enough. Its great to have on hand to serve as a last minute dessert to guests as well.
Since I have a lot of stuff in my kitchen, I worried about counter space. But to my surprise, it doesn't take up that much room at all. And I love the look of it - sleek and funky looking. It looks great displayed in my kitchen! If your an ice cream lover who doesn't want all those unhealthy ingredients they sell at the stores, get this machine! You won't regret it.
