Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream MakerCustomer Review: Loving It Summary: 4 Stars
I sometimes visit family in the desert and each time I go, we have ice-cream. I thought it would be a great idea if we could make our own ice-cream during the summer, a fun pastime? I've heard great things about this ice-maker, from Oprah, friends and online forums. I bought two so, the family could make more than one flavor at the time.
The ice-cream maker was great working indoors. I tried to attempt using it out in 100+ heat, ^_^ boy was that stupid. The ice-cream didn't form at all. LOL.
It is true that you have to freeze the insert for at least 7 hours, people with weaker freezers might want to freeze it for longer. Also, don't attempt to buy a second machine unless you have a really large freezer, the bucket isn't small. Oh yeah, once we ran out of ice, the insert works great as the container for ice baths once frozen.
Once the machine is turned on, it can be really noisy, but not so noisy that you can't talk on the phone in the next room with the door open--I used it while talking to the insurance company. ^_^
If you are a vegan, this thing makes your consumption of ice-cream so much cheaper, though it is time consuming to make the custard to be placed in the machine.
Also, unlike an ice-cream machine with its own freezing process, so you won't need to freeze the bowl, it is much friendlier to cooks who cherish each inch on their counters.
All in all, a four star. A missing star because of the freezer bowl insert and the noise it makes.

Customer Review: technical detail Summary: 1 Stars
Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart,I trust this is a good unit if not for the technical issue. I had twice of the same experience within a month. The unit exploded within 10 sec of movement. After the 2nd same experienced, i had my electrician to check & found out the difference of volt and hz between the two countries. The unit carries 60 hz & 150v. As for Malaysia, unit suitable for usage should carry 50 hz & 210v - 240v. Thank God that the purchased was made with Amazon. Reason for that was, Amazon's custr feedback was within few mins. & i got refunded without hassle. The source of this problem was clearly from Cuisinart who was supposed to have all this technical matter sorted out before they proceed with international sale. However this was cuisinart's reply. Quote. Please note that this unit is wired for use within the US only. We do not recommend the use of these units outside of the US, even when used with a converter, adapter, or transformer. In addition, there is no warranty that applies to this unit when used outside of the US. Unquote.
Kindly note the reply was supposed to be provided before any purchase passed, not after the problem arised. Cuisinart has good products but very poor customer service. Buyers outside of U.S, please check with your technician & the seller before purchasing any electrical item from the internet. I'm still keen to purchase an automatic ice cream maker, please adv if there's any recommendation. thank you.
Customer Review: Outstanding ice Cream Maker Summary: 5 Stars
I recently purchased this ice cream maker after months of debate whether I needed a new ice cream maker. Years ago, when my kids were small, I had loved my Sears ice cream maker which required ice and salt and hours of tending, but the old machine was long gone.
During a week of 80 degree days I gave in, and within hours I'd made the base for simple vanilla custard ice cream, and the bowl was in the freezer in preparation.
This ice cream maker is a really beautiful piece of machinery. The stainless steel housing is handsome and easy to clean. Inner parts are well made. I'd read that it was "loud" but that's absurd! Mine makes a full 2 quart batch in 25 minutes and I can keep on working in the kitchen - it's more like the hum of an expensive dishwasher.
My first batch of vanilla was so luscious I kept *testing* it as it was freezing (quality control, ahem), and I stopped it at a soft stage. I froze the second batch of vanilla at a more firm stage, and the machine did just fine.
Using David Lebovitz's Chocolate Ice Cream recipe from Perfect Scoop: Ice Creams, Sorbets, Granitas, and Sweet Accompaniments yielded the most perfect chocolate ice cream ever, and my co-workers suggested the next day that I simply become their personal chef and give up work entirely to cook for them. The ice cream maker is that good.
Customer Review: SIMPLE, FAST, AWESOME! Summary: 5 Stars
This ice cream maker ROCKS! I wish I'd have gotten one a long time ago. Small footprint on the limited counter space I have, very nice looking, faster than I expected, super-easy to use, easy clean up and man does the finished product taste good.
I ordered the Ben & Jerry's ice cream recipe book and have made one recipe from it and have made 2 recipes of my own - one being a lemon, dried pineapple chunks, with whole cranberries "sorbet" that has agave & liquid stevia instead of sugar - great possibilities for diabetics! I am now keeping the freezer ready to go on my counter, the frozen bowl part ready to go in my freezer and base ingredients always ready. This is a great way for people who are trying to eat raw foods to still enjoy frozen treats, any kind of raw fruit & juice can be made into a slushy, or a soft-serve kind of dessert and you control what goes into your own ice cream if you make that. I know I've only touched the tip of the iceberg with the possibilities of this machine. Love it! I also splurged and put a Coke in it once and ended up with a close-to- Slurpee. Yumm!
A note in usage: don't fill it too close to the top, the contents seem to expand as they freeze, leave some open room so they don't overflow - maybe just fill it 3/4 full of liquid to freeze to make cleanup easiest. When done cleanup is just wash out the clear top & paddle, the freezer bowl part and put "bowl part" back into the freezer in a plastic bag.
Customer Review: Could be a tad bigger Summary: 4 Stars
Really looking forward to next year's strawberry and blueberry seasons. Only made one batch of each so far and they were quite good. People who complain about the machine not making the ice cream hard enough do not seem to appreciate that it would be impossible to remove the ice cream and paddle/stirrer from the machine if the ice cream was fully hardened. To make a full two quarts of finished product (about 30% air content), I find it helpful to pre-chill the interior of the machine housing with frozen gel ice packs, process about 2/3 of the mix (enough mix to fill the frozen canister to about 1.5" below top horizontal bar of the stationary stirrer) for about 20 minutes or until the mix rises close to the top of the canister. Then, after removing 1 quart of the frozen product, add the balance of the mix and process for about another 15 or 20 minutes.
I like Haagen Daz but prefer to make my own because it permits better control over the sugar and butterfat content; and I get a lot of fresh eggs from a neighbor / friend.
The biggest downside is that the whole process of making a cooked custard based ice cream, including cleanups, takes the better part of three hours. Since the custard mix must be thoroughly chilled (refrigerated) for some 6 or so hours, the entire process of making a cooked custard based ice cream usually spans 2 days. It's helpful to have a 1.5 quart or bigger capacity double boiler for cooking the custard.
