Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart GTF Gold Tone FilterCustomer Review: Coffee Filter Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this filter hoping that I would not need to buy more paper filters. It is not that paper filters are all that expensive, but more that they have a habit of falling over every now and then when brewing and then you wind up with a pot full of grounds!
The filter itself works ok, but as noted by others, there is a definate "sludge" in the bottom of the pot no matter what grind you use. The only difference is the amount of "sludge" in the pot. The finer the grind, the more material in the pot!
So, I now use this filter with a paper filter in it. Happily, if a paper filter should fold over during brewing, it prevents the grounds from getting into the pot of coffee. On the negative side, it still means that I am buying paper filters.
From the environmental point of view, paper filters are not an issue for me since I composte them into the earth with the grounds. Seems to work well.
The filter does keep grounds out of the pot and that saves using extra filters to refilter the already brewed coffee plus it saves the agrivation of doing that.
Over all, the filter works for what I need. It just is not enough by itself unless you like extra thick coffee.
Customer Review: Improves taste of coffee Summary: 4 Stars
Coffee beans have a natural oil that enhances the it's flavor. Much of this oil is normally absorbed into the paper of traditional disposable filters. The gold filter is made of a fine plastic mesh and allows the oils of the coffee bean to flow into the pot. It adds to the richness of the coffee's flavor. And in my opinion makes for a better tasting cup of coffee.
You could probably purchase hundreds of generic paper filters for the cost of this one but over time, (especially if you make several pots of coffee a day), the cost savings will be realized. It is said that these filters will last a life time. I'm not too sure. I assumed that it was a metal filter but since it is plastic and requires a washing after each use...... I rather doubt that. I have been using mine for several months and it is holding up quite well.
It's very easy to clean. You dump the moist coffee grinds and can either put it in the dish washer or hold it under running water to remove the remaining residue. I don't particularly like handling the wet coffee grinds,
(I've had several messy spills) but then that's the price you pay for using a permanent coffee filter.
Customer Review: Saves Money Summary: 4 Stars
The Cuisinart GTF Gold Tone Filter for the Cuisinart 12-cup Coffee Maker - Stainless Steel with 30 Paper Filters is a great way to save money over paper filters, but the fact is paper filters do a better job -- in fact, they do a a much better job. If you use the GTF with a standard grade of ground coffee, you can expect fine coffee particles throughout the bottom quarter of your pot. A coffee that is not so finely ground would probably leave less residue than the Gold Tone Filter, but the end result is the same: this is a problem you do not have to worry about with paper filters.
That said, the flavor is almost as good (at least for the first few cups) and just having a permanent filter around will save you the aggravation of discovering you are out of paper filters while you are getting ready for work. That comfort alone makes this item worth the modest cost of six to seven dollars (the price as I write this review.) If you grind your own coffee less fine than commercial brands you can get rid of most of the problem of residue at the bottom, at which point the GTF becomes a very worth while purchase.
Customer Review: Impermanent Filter. Summary: 3 Stars
Although you would think this would be a permanent filter, it really is not. I am on my third filter in about one and half years. The coffee maker I have, did not come with a "permanent" filter and I did not want to keep using paper ones. I purchased this and it did its job and I was satisfied.
After about 6 months or so I noticed that coffee was starting to get sludgier as other reviewers have noted. In my case, I discovered that after a while, the mesh screen rips at the bottom portion of the filter. Therefore, it would make sense that sludge would get through when the coffee is brewing.
I have not idea if this is a weakness in this model or because of the design. Perhaps if the mesh was not attached to plastic and it was a mesh bottom, the structural integrity would be stronger and last longer. Whatever the factor for the mesh screen pulling apart from the plastic is, I find this filter satisfying while it lasts and of course I am not happy that eventually the filter disintegrates. I may continue purchasing but now I am going to look for an alternate one.
Customer Review: I had some issues with my third one of these Summary: 3 Stars
First, let me say that I love my Cuisinart coffee maker, and I love that this Gold Tone filter is available as a reusable, economical way of filtering my coffee. I have had my coffee maker for almost seven years, which means that I must periodically replace the filters as the mesh get gunked up with fine grounds. When I purchased my third one, it arrived not circular at the top, but rather oval. I have to press it firmly, instead of just dropping it in as I did the others, to get it to fit. Yes, it works, and it works well. But I'm annoyed that either quality control is shaky or I received a defective one. Fortunately, the filter and its plastic frame are flexible enough to fit despite the shape.
I recommend gold tone filters because they leave no aftertaste, not even a hint, and they can be used for years, as long as you keep them clean. (I use my faucet's spray nozzle to knock out small particles.) If my latest purchase is any indication, don't expect high quality, just practicality.
