Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart GR-1 Griddler Panini and Sandwich PressCustomer Review: Panini anyone? You know it! Summary: 5 Stars
Normally I'm not one to go crazy over kitchen appliances but I am compelled to sing the praises of this little wonder. This is sad, but my wife and I eat grilled cheese sandwiches a couple of nights a week because we love them so much. It's sort of our dirty little secret. This little miracle has opened up a whole new universe of possibilities. Our old-style Salton grilled-cheese maker would invariable push the top slice of bread out from the rest of the sandwich because of the operation of the hinge, and forget about putting anything in there other than bread and a couple of slices of cheese because it couldn't handle the thickness. With the GR-1 though, you can put a Dagwood-sized sandwich (the floating hinge allows HUGE sandwiches) in and in just a few minutes, the weight of the top plate has compressed the whole thing into a critical mass of concentrated goodness. Anything I can put between two piecs of bread is becoming a panini these days. This will probably take five years off of my life because I have doubled my weekly consumption of molten cheese, but it's worth it.
Customer Review: The Griddler! Summary: 4 Stars
Bought this on clearance from the Amazon ware-house. An amazing grill and this has changed my idea of a quick meal. I buy ingredients easy to assemble. Sun dried tomatoes, roasted peppers, Cold cuts of all kinds, all kinds of cheeses. Chicken, skirt steak and even hot dogs!Use your imagination or look up some recipes. It's mind boggling. I will never look at a grill cheese sandwich the same way again. I have added spinach, summer squash and even carrots to some of my creations and have my lunch ready in minutes. I have packed this up a few times and took it to work. restaurant style sandwiches at maybe 1.50, 2 bucks top! And the clean up is easy. Baby Broccoli and roasted peppers and some pepper jack on Italian bread yeah. It works for me. Turkey sun-dried tomatoes, fresh basil and provolone a little mayo. My lunch hour has now become a mid-day feast. My only regret is that it designed for sandwiches only. You could grill fish or hot dogs with it but it will be harder to clean. You would do well to stick with grill sandwiches with this item.
Customer Review: great for one use only, then you can toss it Summary: 1 Stars
Cuisinart GR-1 Griddler Panini and Sandwich PressI received this panini press as a gift and made panini sandwiches tasted pretty good, the problem came when it was time to clean this thing I have no idea how anyone can say its easy to clean its just like these terrible george foreman grills you can NEVER COMPLETELY CLEAN IT there is always some residue. I would throw this thing out rather than attempt to get this thing clean. reason im writing this review is I have received the GR-4 its the model that grills makes pancakes has detachable plates etc etc and Ive read the amazon reviews b4 I decide whether or not to keep it and eveyone says how easy it is to clean. You dont know who to trust but you can trust me when i say dont waste your money on this grill unless you have some unique ability to remove the tar like substance that build up on this oven. PEOPLE WHO ARE SAYING ITS EASY TO CLEAN MUST WORK FOR CUISINART!!!!
Customer Review: Great for making healthy, quick meals Summary: 5 Stars
I love sandwiches. My typical lunch that I take to work is a turkey sandwich on 100% whole wheat with veggies. While it tastes good, it does not compare to a hot and crispy panini made on this grill. My wife and I have starting eating panini sandwiches once a week for dinner.
The great thing is that there are so many different variations- one day you can do a spicy veggie hoagie with hot peppers and mustard; another day you can do an italian ciabatta sandwich with fresh pesto. And the crispy texture just makes everything taste better, without adding any calories or fat. Grilled Cheeses are amazing using this thing.
If you tend to coat the outside of your sandwich with butter or margarine, try using extra virgin olive oil instead. It tastes just as good, and is much healthier.
The unit is also easy to clean. And the lack of a power switch isn't a problem at all for us. At this price, this is a must-have tool for your kitchen.
Customer Review: Garbage Summary: 2 Stars
I reserve 1 star rating for products that don't do what they are supposed to. This product does what it is supposed to- It looks good, price is reasonable, nice and compact, worked very well- BUT - not for very long. The non-stick on the plates lasted 2 months - and replacement plates cost just as much as the machine itself. I think it has alot to do with the sandwich pattern that it tried to press the bread into. It has lots of places where it can stick - Pam doesn't help and it makes the bread taste funny. Never mind the oozing mess that comes out of the whole machine as the stuff in the sandwich starts to melt. All in all .. good while it lasted. But not recommended. I bought the West Bend Panini press to replace this one. Its been 4 months - it's not attractive - but it does the job really well and it $50. I looked at the bigger machines - but the problem is - they are all BIG. And they have "crinkle cut" grills which are just as difficult to clean.
